Job Responsibilities

Summary: The Public Transit Driver is responsible for safe, courteous, and timely transportation of passengers in accordance with established routes in compliance with agency and FTA/DOT regulations. This position plays a vital role in supporting community mobility by providing reliable transportation services to the public, including elderly individuals, persons with disabilities, and the general public. Must maintain vehicle cleanliness. Drivers must demonstrate professionalism, strong customer service skills, and a commitment to safety. Must pass a pre‑employment drug screening, physical, drug and alcohol screening.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned.)

Transportation Operations:

  • Safely operate agency‑owned transit vehicles in compliance with all traffic laws, DOT regulations, and agency policies.
  • Provide transportation services along assigned routes and schedules, including deviated or demand‑response services as applicable.
  • Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip vehicle inspections and report any mechanical or safety concerns promptly.
  • Ensure vehicles are clean, fueled, and ready for service.
  • Accurately complete required trip logs, mileage reports, passenger counts, and other documentation.
  • Assist passengers with boarding and exiting vehicles, including securing mobility devices and providing reasonable assistance as needed.
  • Provide courteous, respectful, and professional customer service to all passengers.
  • Enforce transit rules and safety procedures while maintaining a positive and calm demeanor.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, accidents, or incidents and complete required reports.
  • Ensure passenger confidentiality and dignity at all times.

Compliance & Agency Support:

  • Adhere to ADA requirements, agency policies, and funding source regulations.
  • Participate in required safety training, defensive driving, and drug and alcohol testing programs. Communicate effectively with dispatch, supervisors, and other staff regarding route changes, delays, or incidents.
  • Support agency goals related to accessibility, equity, and community service.

Professional Development:

  • Participate in ongoing training related to transit safety, customer service, and compliance requirements.
  • Maintain required certification and licenses.

Requirements

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Education and/or Experience: Prefer three (3) years of related driving experience. CDL license preferred. License must have a P endorsement and must have a clean driving record.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two‑digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Computer Skills & Technology: To perform this job successfully, an individual should be willing to advance computer skills as needed for the job.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: CDL Class C driver license preferred. License with a P endorsement. CPR certified. Will be required to attend other training as assigned (First Aid, Defensive Driving, Emergency Evacuations, etc.). Ability to obtain and maintain DOT physical.
  • Other Skills & Abilities: Will be considered safety sensitive under the drug testing rules of FTA. Will have a physical as required by DOT. Must pass a pre‑employment drug test. Will be subject to FTA Drug and Alcohol testing rules. Will be subject to random and other drug testing. Will perform maintenance checks with written documentation daily. Must be able to attend night meetings and training if necessary. Must be able to travel out of town for training or conferences, including overnight stays of up to one week.
  • Training & Safety Culture: Flexibility to attend evening greetings or training as needed; willingness to travel for training and conferences. Completion of all required training is mandatory. Employees must consistently adhere to and support the organization’s culture of safety by following safety policies, participating in safety‑related training, and contributing to a safe work environment.
