Job description

$51,500.80 - $63,169.60 Annually

  • Starting Salary: $51,500.80
  • After Six Months of Successful Employment: $53,476.80
  • After One Year of Successful Employment: $55,390.40
  • Maximum salary is achieved after three successful years of employment.

NOTE: Annual salary adjustments may also occur, based on collective bargaining agreements.

An employee in the Public Service Worker I (Engineering Technician) classification in the Engineering Division of the Department of Public Works performs duties related to the planning and project management of City projects including but not limited to road improvements, drainage improvements, bike paths, sidewalks, water mains, sanitary and storm sewers, telecommunications, parks, and other duties as assigned. An employee in this classification may be assigned overtime work as required, is subject to call-in outside normal working hours, performs other engineering functions as assigned, and may be assigned to different work assignments in emergency situations.

Illustrative Examples of Work
  • Inspects, measures, documents, photographs, and witnesses tests on engineering construction projects
  • Prepares inspection reports and related documentation involving contractors and other agencies
  • Assists in preparing plans and specifications
  • Assists with surveying work and field GIS data collection
  • Assists with inventory of utilities, including water, sanitary, storm, roads, and sidewalks
  • Performs various administrative functions
Minimum Requirements
  • Be a citizen of the United States or resident alien with the right to work in the United States;
  • Have a high school diploma or a valid equivalency certificate;
  • Have a minimum of two years’ full-time work experience in the field of civil engineering or construction management;
  • Be eligible for a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) for, or have a valid Group ‘A’ Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake;
  • Have or be eligible for a valid Industrial Truck Driving Permit for operation of a forklift;
  • Have or be eligible to obtain soil erosion and sedimentation control inspection ability with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) within one year of hire;
  • Be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds.
Parts of Examination and Weights

Written Test - 25% Interview - 75%

NOTE: A maximum of eight qualified applicants with the highest passing score on the written test will be invited to the interview part of the examination. Candidates must pass the written test and the interview in order to be placed on the eligible list. In the event there are three or less candidates who pass the Written Test, the interview panel will be waived, and the parts of examination and weights will be 100% Written Test.

NOTE: At the time of appointment, applicants are required to pass a pre-employment medical examination conducted by a physician authorized by the City of Livonia.
