Job summary

Wisconsin Counties Association in Wisconsin County seeks an attorney to advise and represent the County under the direction of the Corporation Counsel. You will handle civil litigation, zoning matters, FMLA/FLSA, public records, labor and personnel issues, and provide legal guidance to the County Board and departments.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
• Litigation experience such as court trials, jury trials, and administrative proceedings is desirable.
• Knowledge of civil procedure, rules of evidence, municipal law, real estate law.
• Familiarity with alternative dispute resolution processes a plus.
• Basic computer skills, including word processors, spreadsheets, database programs, and presentation software.

Responsibilities

• Represent the Human Services Department in trials and hearings under Wis. statutes.
• Represent the Zoning Department in appeals and assist Board of Adjustment with bylaws and permits.
• Advise on the Family Medical Leave Act, Fair Labor Standards Act and Wisconsin public records/open meetings law.
• Provide legal matters for animals under Wis. Stats. including Sheriff’s Department actions.
• Represent the County in labor law and personnel matters before ERS, Unemployment, and Equal Rights divisions.
• Aid the Corporation Counsel in duties of the Corporation Counsel.
• Provide legal representation to County Board and its subunits, officers and departments.
• Perform legal research and writing as needed; draft and review contracts.
• Draft resolutions and ordinances; oversee code enforcement and collections.
• Attend meetings; monitor developments in the law; maintain professional relationships.
• Work evenings and weekends on short notice.
