Location: South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics

The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an experienced and dedicated professional as a full-time Public Safety Officer to provide adequate safety supervision and emergency response to its campus, with a focus on residential students.

Under the supervision of the Director of Public Safety, the Public Safety Officer performs duties to include appropriate armed response for the protection and security of students, employees, and guests of GSSM and to support school policies for safety and security supporting state, county, and municipal laws. The Public Safety Officer will coordinate and administer a comprehensive school safety program for GSSM.

Key responsibilities of the Public Safety Officer:
  • Serve as law enforcement officer for the GSSM campus by patrolling GSSM property for suspicious activity, unauthorized persons on campus, or unauthorized entry after hours.
  • Provide complete and consistent protection for the campus, students, employees, and guests.
  • Respond to and investigate safety and security concerns.
  • Work with GSSM Student Services in coordinating safety procedures and drills.
  • Attend the main reception area to screen and admit guests and visitors per policy and provide deterrence or response to any physical or violent actions.
  • Patrol the campus parking lot, grounds, building, and outside perimeter to ensure safety of the students and employees, prevent crime, detect violations of the law, and protect property. Develop and submit written safety reports.
  • Respond to campus emergencies, providing assistance and directing traffic and or personnel. Liaison with local law enforcement and emergency services personnel when necessary. Document incidents and submit necessary reports.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
  • A minimum of (7) years of police/security experience.
  • Valid SC driver's license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • SC Class I Law Enforcement Officer Criminal Justice certification required.
Additional Requirements:
  • Must maintain police certifications.
  • Must have or be able to obtain Active Shooter training.
  • Ability to walk, run, climb, crawl, or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Hours to include evenings, weekends, and athletic events as assigned.
