This position is responsible for performing a variety of skilled work in the repair, overhaul, preventive maintenance, and operational readiness of public safety equipment and emergency vehicles.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan and schedule maintenance, both preventive and discretionary, to ensure compliance with all applicable vehicle and equipment standards, rules, regulations, and County policies. Enforce safety regulations and determine operational readiness of public safety equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance and repair of all department vehicles and equipment, including apparatus repair, electrical diagnostics, and hydraulic system repairs.
- Obtain costs using available warranty and arrange for service work by evaluating service and parts options.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and stock, place orders, and verify receipt.
- Stay current in field knowledge through publications and training.
- Inspect work carried out by service attendants during routine vehicle servicing.
- Assist and advise mechanics with repairs of all vehicles and equipment.
- Act as Service Writer to inspect completed work orders and ensure quality work from internal and external services.
- Assist with developing specifications for new fire apparatus and equipment.
- Create, direct, and monitor outsourced contractual work.
- Analyze data, prepare reports, maintain records, and recommend improvements in fleet and equipment management.
- Respond to call-out assignments when off-duty as needed.
- Respond to emergency or crisis situations (e.g., hurricanes, floods) and perform emergency and recovery duties as assigned.
- Be present at the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) during emergencies to provide assistance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License with a clean driving record (Class B preferred).
- A Commercial Driver’s License Class B is preferred.
Mechanic Levels and Requirements:
Mechanic I
- One year of related experience or equivalent education and experience.
- Basic knowledge of diagnostic equipment and PCs.
- Level I EVT preferred.
- ASE certifications desirable.
Mechanic II
- Three years of related experience or equivalent.
- Experience with diagnostic equipment and PCs.
- Level II EVT preferred.
- ASE certifications desirable.
Mechanic III
- One college or technical school certificate plus five years of related experience, or equivalent.
- Experience with diagnostic equipment and PCs.
- Master EVT preferred.
- ASE certifications desirable.
Supplemental Information:
- Regular attendance is essential.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, including Word and Outlook, required.
- Ability to maintain preventive maintenance programs and interpret safety and operational documents.
- Effective communication skills required.
- Availability during emergencies and disasters is required.
- Must be able to perceive, inspect, and assess safety and maintenance instructions, distinguish colors, depths, and details.
- Must be able to perform physical tasks, including moving objects up to 70 pounds and working in various environments.
- Work may involve exposure to weather, noise, high places, electrical risks, and airborne particles.
