Job summary

City of Carlsbad is seeking a Communications Operator II to receive, evaluate, and act on emergency and non-emergency calls supporting police and fire departments. You will operate radio/telephone systems, enter data, and coordinate with multiple agencies under pressure.

The role requires strong communication, accuracy, and the ability to work a rotating shift, including nights and weekends. Training and development opportunities accompany a mission to serve the community of Carlsbad.

Qualifications

  • One year of operational experience in public safety performing duties comparable to Communication Operator I.
  • POS T Basic Complaint/Dispatcher Certificate.
  • Ability to keyboard/type at a minimum net speed of 40 wpm.
  • Shift work including nights, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Receive routine and emergency calls and dispatch police, fire and EMS units via radio/dispatch console and computer terminals.
  • Document facts accurately and coordinate activities within city departments and with other agencies.
  • Monitor radio frequencies and dispatch appropriate emergency units as needed.
  • Provide courteous, accurate information to callers and maintain composure under pressure.
  • Assist in supervising and training less experienced personnel with on-the-job evaluations.
