Job summary

South Carolina Legal Services (SCLS) seeks two client-focused Counsel & Advice Attorneys to provide legal counsel and guidance to eligible low-income clients throughout South Carolina. This position reviews client applications, analyzes legal issues, conducts legal research, and prepares counsel and advice letters, and supporting brief services where appropriate.

Location statewide with remote option; this is a full-time role with a salary range of $85,000–$95,000 depending on experience.

Qualifications

• J.D. degree from an accredited law school.
• Active membership in good standing with the South Carolina Bar.
• Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills.
• Excellent written communication skills and the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly and effectively.
• Minimum of five (5) years of legal practice experience.
• Experience analyzing legal issues and applying relevant laws and regulations.
• Ability to manage a high-volume caseload and meet productivity standards.
• Strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
• Commitment to serving low-income and vulnerable populations.
• Experience in legal aid, public interest law, or civil legal services preferred.
• Knowledge of housing, family, consumer, public benefits, employment, education, or other poverty law issues preferred.

Responsibilities

• Review client applications and supporting documentation.
• Analyze legal issues, conduct legal research, and draft recommended counsel and advice letters.
• Prepare comprehensive counsel and advice letters and support brief services when appropriate.
• Provide high-quality legal guidance to eligible low-income clients across South Carolina.
