Job summary

New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is seeking an executive to lead a citywide suicide prevention strategy and oversee the Office’s operations, staffing, budget, and performance.

Responsibilities include coordinating with interagency partners, guiding epidemiologic and surveillance efforts, and translating findings into actionable policy and program improvements to address disparities and population-level risks.

Qualifications

• Advanced training or professional experience in public health, epidemiology, suicide prevention, injury prevention, behavioral health, population health, or related field.
• Senior-level experience guiding research, surveillance, data, or evaluation functions within public health, healthcare, academic, or government settings.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary initiatives involving government, academic, healthcare, community and external partners.
• Experience managing organizational operations, budgets, funding, and senior staff.
• Ability to translate scientific evidence and population health data into policy, strategy, and large-scale prevention planning.
• Experience representing an organization in executive, governmental, academic, or public-facing settings.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and implementation of a citywide suicide prevention strategy and establish citywide priorities for the Office.
• Direct the Office’s operations, staffing, budget, performance, and organizational development.
• Supervise senior leadership and ensure coordination across strategic, research, surveillance, partnership, and prevention functions.
• Establish goals, performance measures, and accountability mechanisms to advance population-level suicide prevention.
• Coordinate with interagency partners and academia to address population-level trends in suicide and injury/violence prevention.
• Provide executive oversight of epidemiologic, surveillance, research, and evaluation functions.
• Set research priorities aligned with citywide suicide prevention planning and needs.
• Translate findings into actionable policy, programs, and systems improvements.
• Identify disparities and geographic patterns and address them through research and surveillance.
• Lead coordination with divisional bureaus, academic institutions, healthcare systems and stakeholders for large-scale research and prevention initiatives.
• Ensure research findings are translated into recommendations for policy and systems change.
