Job summary

The City of Martinsville in Martinsville, VA is seeking a Custodian to perform cleaning and basic maintenance in public buildings. Work is supervised by the Building Maintenance Supervisor/Public Works Director and classified as Grade 7, non-exempt, full-time.

Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, dusting, restroom sanitation, trash removal, minor repairs, and operating custodial equipment. A high school diploma is preferred and prior custodial experience is advantageous.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Experience in custodial/janitorial work preferred.
• Experience in minor building maintenance desirable.
• Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Sweep, mop, scrub, and polish floors using hand or powered tools.
• Dust and clean furniture, fixtures, and equipment; arrange and move items as needed.
• Clean walls, windows, and woodwork; vacuum carpets and rugs.
• Clean and sanitize restrooms; restock paper products, soap, and other supplies.
• Remove trash and debris from interior and exterior areas.
• Replace light bulbs and perform minor maintenance tasks and report needs.
• Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums and floor buffers.
• May operate a City vehicle as needed to perform duties.
