Job summary

County of Santa Barbara is seeking an experienced leader to serve as Public Defender. The role directs the Office of the Public Defender, overseeing legal services, budgeting, and operations while partnering with County leaders and agencies.

The ideal candidate has substantial public defender experience and a track record of collaboration, integrity, and strategic program implementation within the criminal justice system.

Qualifications

• Significant experience as Public Defender, Assistant Public Defender, or Deputy Public Defender.
• Strong leadership, strategic thinking and commitment to public service.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the Office of the Public Defender, providing overall leadership and management of services and operations.
• Lead department budgeting, performance management, and accountability systems.
• Represent the Office in interactions with County Executive Office, Board of Supervisors, and external agencies.
• Foster collaboration across the criminal justice system and community partnerships to advance system improvement.
• Drive public-safety initiatives, diversion, rehabilitation, and whole-person care strategies.
