Job summary

The State of Iowa's Iowa State Public Defender’s Office seeks an Investigator 2 for the Ottumwa office in Wapello County. You will support public defenders by conducting pretrial investigations, interviewing clients and witnesses, and gathering evidence for defense strategies.

Responsibilities include preparing reports, reviewing case information, coordinating with experts, and ensuring proper documentation for court use. A background in law enforcement or related fields is preferred.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a relevant degree and experience as an investigator.
• Experience in law enforcement, corrections, criminology, or related administrative roles.
• Knowledge of court processes, depositions and evidence handling is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist public defenders in pretrial investigation of cases.
• Obtain and review case information to determine investigative methods.
• Conduct field investigations and interviews of clients and witnesses.
• Prepare written reports and collaborate on defense strategy.
• Collect and preserve photographic or video evidence and other materials.
• Assist in serving documents and coordinating expert witnesses.

Education

Bachelor's degree in law enforcement/criminology/police science/accounting/finance/law

One year of full-time investigator experience in law enforcement or related field

One year in administration of unemployment insurance/public assistance or court processes

Five years education/experience with 30 semester hours in related fields equals one year

Current continuous experience in state executive branch as Investigator 1 or Warehouse/Grain Dealer Examiner
