Job summary

The Iowa State Public Defender’s Office in Des Moines seeks a Public Defender 3 (Immigration) to represent indigent clients and advise on immigration consequences. The role is based in the Des Moines Adult office in Polk County, Iowa.

You will supervise interns, collaborate with immigration-focused teams, and develop resources to enhance advocacy for immigrant clients while providing high-quality legal representation.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited law school.
• Current license to practice law in the State of Iowa; or eligibility to obtain license.

Responsibilities

• Advocate for indigent clients in criminal and immigration-related matters at all court stages.
• Supervise advanced level interns in conjunction with law schools.
• Investigate facts, interview witnesses, prepare defenses, and draft motions or briefs.
• Consult with public defenders and contract attorneys on immigration-related cases and advise clients.
• Develop and update tools, briefs, and resources to analyze immigration consequences and improve advocacy.
• Stay current on developments in immigration practice relevant to criminal defense.
