Job summary

The New Mexico Law Offices of the Public Defender seeks a Public Defender 2 (PD2) to provide professional legal services representing indigent clients in litigation, appeals and counsel. This role may involve juvenile, youthful offender or appellate work and requires supervision from experienced attorneys.

The department supports flexible work arrangements including teleworking and non-standard schedules. Starting pay is $37.74/hour with an additional differential of $0.76/hour, and typical PD2

Qualifications

• License to practice law in New Mexico, or eligible for a limited license issued by NM Supreme Court.

Responsibilities

• Handle a variety of cases including misdemeanor, juvenile, youthful offender or appellate cases.
• Assist higher level Attorneys with complex cases.
• Advise and counsel clients regarding case strategy and possible outcomes.
• Work under supervision of more experienced colleagues and supervisor/manager.
• Conduct plea bargaining with District Attorneys and others to resolve cases.
• Attend seminars and training classes to maintain and develop professional skills.
• Draft/review reports and legal documents.
