Job summary

City of Pittsfield is seeking a Local Building Inspector to review permit applications, inspect buildings, and issue permits under the Office of the Building Inspector. The role requires strong code knowledge and the ability to interact professionally with the public and city staff.

Qualifying candidates will have 5+ years in building supervision or a related associate degree, a MA Building Code understanding, and required certifications.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Five years of experience in supervision of building construction or design, or a two-year associate degree in a related field or any combination to confer equivalent knowledge.
• General knowledge of building materials, energy requirements of the MA Building Code, and safety provisions.
• Certification by the Board of Building Regulations and Standards.
• Continuing education credits required to maintain Building Official certification.
• Massachusetts Class D driver’s license.
• Ability to interact with customers in a cordial and professional manner.
• Experience writing cost estimates and construction contracts.
• Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and stay highly organized.

Responsibilities

• Performs required inspections and issues permits.
• Enforces Building Code provisions under supervision.
• Assists Building Commissioner in duties.
• Inspects new and existing buildings and structures.
• Examines and approves plans for new and repaired structures.
• Maintains electronic permit/inspection records.
• Writes inspection reports and violation notices.
• Investigates code and zoning violations and enforces corrections.
• Performs other inspector duties as assigned.
