Normal Work Hours/Days: Varied schedule, generally Monday‑Friday, 8am – 4pm

Peer Services Overview

Peer Services encourages and supports individuals with successful management of their mental health recovery. Peer Services supports individuals transitioning to more independent living or hospital discharge using four primary service interventions:

• Engagement in a personal, positive, supportive relationship with a peer
• Involvement in an array of Peer Support Meetings located both in the hospital and in the community
• Linkage to a broad range of community‑based service and natural supports
• Teaching community adjustment and wellness self‑management skills

Primary Job Functions

The Peer Specialist provides intensive support through a personalized balance of social, recreational, skill‑teaching and linkage development services for individual match relationships.

• Schedule individual contacts of two to three hours with each person at least once per week
• Initiate dialogue with each person about skills and supports during individual meetings once per week
• Establish linkages that result in the person’s active use of resources in the community
• Facilitate peer/mutual support meetings in day programs and hospitals
• Facilitate peer/mutual support meetings in the community
• Complete meeting report forms and sign‑in sheets for each meeting
• Perform travel and reporting responsibilities for match relationships
• Prepare activity reports and travel forms
• Attend one‑on‑one meetings with the team leader twice per month
• Complete all documentation requirements for provided services weekly
• Participate in mandatory Peer Services Team meetings and all scheduled training

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.

Valid Alabama driver’s license and a motor vehicle with an acceptable driving record and government‑required insurance coverage. If a personal vehicle is used, insurance must meet or exceed state standards.

Must attain certification upon hire and maintain certification.

Must demonstrate lived experience with mental illness and be a role model to others pursuing recovery.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Demonstrated experience in using one’s own recovery story as a tool to educate and inspire peers and non‑peer staff
• Good role model and active recovery for own mental health challenges
• Ability to convey a message of hope and recovery for people with mental health challenges
• Knowledge of the Alabama State public mental health system, advocacy, self‑help and empowerment programs for people receiving mental health services
• Ability to complete basic documentation requirements regarding work activities
