Job summary

CorrHealth is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to work on-site at a correctional facility in Portales, New Mexico. You will collaborate with a physician to plan and evaluate patient care, examine illnesses and injuries, and coordinate with health staff to implement treatment plans.

Schedule: 24 hours weekly on-site plus weekly on-call. You must hold an unrestricted NP/PA license, a current DEA license, and have at least one year of clinical experience; correctional setting

Qualifications

• Current, unrestricted NP/PA license in the state of employment.
• Current DEA license to prescribe controlled substances.
• One year of clinical experience; correctional/detention facility experience preferred.
• CPR/BLS certification required.
• Ability to use standard medical equipment and document in SOAPE format.
• Pass background check and pre-employment drug test.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Chief Medical Officer and Site Medical Director to manage medical needs.
• Conduct daily sick calls, examine patients, and perform treatments.
• Consult with physician on non-emergency conditions beyond protocol.
• Execute physician orders and coordinate with health staff for patient care.
• Identify emergencies and arrange transfers to appropriate facilities.
• Admit patients and coordinate with nursing staff on treatment plans.
• Perform annual physical exams and order labs.
• Document findings using SOAPE method.
• Participate in Quality Management and Peer Review meetings.

Position Overview

The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant works in collaboration with a physician to plan and evaluate patient health care, examines and treats illnesses and minor injuries, and works with the facility health staff to implement the necessary patient care. Reports to Site Medical Director and/or Physician, Chief Medical Officer, and HSA.

Essential Job Duties

• Collaborate, as necessary, with the Chief Medical Officer and relevant authorities to assist with management of the medical needs and responsibilities at the site. Takes direction from the Site Medical Director and/or Physician, as well as the Chief Medical Officer.
• Holds daily sick call, examines patients, and carries out treatments
• Consults with physician about non-emergency conditions that fall outside protocol parameters
• Carries out physician's orders and consults with necessary health staff to ensure the patient receives the appropriate physical/mental care, as needed
• Identifies medical emergency conditions and provides appropriate emergency care, including arranging for transfer to nearest appropriate facility as necessary
• Admits patients and coordinates with nursing staff to develop treatment plans
• Performs annual physical examinations
• Orders appropriate laboratory studies
• Classifies appropriate worker status
• Performs wound treatment
• Provides discharge planning as required
• Electronically documents all findings using SOAPE method
• Attends and participates in Quality Management and Peer Review meetings/activities

Minimum Education/Experience Requirements

• Current, unrestricted license as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in state of employment
• Current DEA license
• One year experience
• Prefer correctional/detention facility experience

Employment Requirements

• Must maintain all certifications, educational requirements, licensing, etc. for this position

• Willing to assist coworkers in the job duties and work overtime if required; may act as a resource to other coworkers
• Maintains confidentiality, dignity, and security of health records and protected health information in compliance with HIPAA requirements

This position routinely requires (but is not limited to) the following:

• Ability to identify and detect objects and assess situations from a variety of distances
• Ability to stay calm in stressful and demanding situations
• Frequently transports objects up to 50 pounds

Work Environment

Work is performed inside a correctional facility. Employees are exposed to some level of risk and/or harm by inmates including exposure to blood borne pathogens. Employee is expected to work in accordance with all security rules and regulations to minimize the risk of danger and/or harm to themselves or other employees.

Employee must comply with all current and future State, Federal, and Local laws and regulations, court orders, Administrative Directives and standards and policies and procedures of the site where assigned, including those of professional organizations such as ACA, NCCHC, etc. Employee must treat every other member of the CorrHealth team, all correctional personnel, all inmates and third parties in the facility with the proper dignity and respect. Actions or communications that are inappropriate or degrading will not be tolerated.
