Job description

Position Summary:

The Part-time Fire Science Classroom Aide is responsible for providing support to full-time faculty in conducting training and assisting to ensure a safe working and learning environment for students.

Essential Functions:

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists faculty members with course instruction and practical experiences as needed
  • Provides assistance to students, serving as a mentor and tutor as necessary
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Current Arizona State Firefighter 1 and 2 certifications
  • HAZMAT FRO or IFSAC or ProBoard equivalent
  • Current firefighter experience, including actively working in the field
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of current technologies and word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software, specifically Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner
  • Ability to relate to a diverse population and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations
  • Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment
  • Ability to effectively identify and resolve problems and to maintain strict confidentiality related to sensitive information
  • Ability to analyze problems, identifies solutions, and takes appropriate actions to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
  • NFPR 1041 Instructor Certification
  • Certification and/or experience as an incident safety officer
Work Environment

Work is primarily performed under general supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in a typical classroom, laboratory, office or online setting, with appropriate climate controls. Evening or weekend work may be required

Physical Requirements:
  • Essential functions of this position require: lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.
  • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting majority of time; walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met
  • Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem solving skills are important
