Job summary

The Part-Time Audiovisual (AV) Technician is part of the Student Center AV team at Johns Hopkins University's Homewood Campus, supporting events with AV setup, testing, operation and strike-down.

On-site role with flexible hours for evenings and weekends; candidates should have strong knowledge of AV equipment, sound, projectors, cameras, and lighting. Johns Hopkins opened its Bloomberg Student Centre in 2025, offering engaging campus event opportunities.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Preference for current Johns Hopkins University student enrollment.
• Strong working knowledge of AV equipment, sound systems, projectors, cameras and lighting.

Responsibilities

• Set up, operate, and strike audiovisual equipment in a hospitality and live-event environment.
• Provide excellent customer service to clients during events.
• Troubleshoot AV equipment and replace defective parts.
• Support daily operations for gaming lounge areas, DMC, and digital studio.
• Perform routine inspection of AV systems and equipment.
• Assist with internal audiovisual training of peers.
• Advise staff on equipment recommendations for events and future purchases.
• Document troubleshooting procedures for future reference.

Essential Functions

• Set up, operate, and strike audiovisual equipment in a hospitality and live‑event environment
• Provide excellent customer service to clients during event
• Troubleshoot AV equipment and replace defective or malfunctioning parts
• Support daily operations for the gaming lounge areas, DMC, and digital studio to assist students with equipment use
• Perform routine inspection of audiovisual systems and equipment
• Support internal audiovisual training of peers
• Assist professional staff with audiovisual equipment recommendations for specific events and for future purchase
• Document troubleshooting procedures and resolutions for future reference

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• A high school diploma or its equivalent
• Currently enrolled Johns Hopkins University student preferred
• Strong working knowledge of AV equipment
• Working knowledge of sound systems
• Working knowledge of projectors and TVs
• Working knowledge of camera and lighting techniques

Skills And Abilities

• Excellent customer service, organisation, communication, and problem solving skills
• Working knowledge of Mac and PC computers

Physical Demands

• Must be able to traverse throughout the arena and campus. Regularly ascending/descending building levels and occasionally ladders or stools
• Must be able to lift, move and set up items weighing as much as 50 lbs.
• Must be able to discuss, converse with, and exchange accurate information with clients, guests, staff, stakeholders, etc.
• Written, verbal, and comprehension skills in English required
• Work is performed indoors and outdoors as needed
