Overview

The Psychologist for the School Health Program is a vital clinical role within the Montefiore Health System, dedicated to delivering comprehensive, high-quality mental health services directly within the communities we serve. Operating primarily within school-based health centers and public schools, this position provides essential psychotherapy to individuals, families, and groups, as well as consultation to staff across a diverse patient population.

The successful candidate will ensure seamless compliance with all institutional standards, regulatory policies, and medical record documentation guidelines established by Montefiore Medical Center, while strictly adhering to the requirements of outside municipal and state governing agencies. This role requires a high degree of clinical independence, exceptional collaboration with school personnel, and a steadfast commitment to expanding community outreach, clinical supervision, and equitable healthcare access.

Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive individual, group, and/or family psychotherapy for patients while ensuring a high standard of care.
  • Complete all required medical and mental health documentation accurately and thoroughly in accordance with regulatory and institutional policies.
  • Follow proper clinical protocols and adhere strictly to established continuous quality improvement (CQI) and health system standards to guarantee optimal patient protection.
  • Assess patient needs, determine appropriate mental health (DSM) diagnoses, and formulate comprehensive DSM-based treatment plans, making necessary external and internal clinical referrals when appropriate.
  • Maintain absolute competence and familiarity with all administrative logs, internal clinical tracking systems, and electronic health records.
  • Attend all required departmental and clinical meetings, maintaining active participation in the professional development, staff consultation, and collaboration of the school health team. Actively engage in community outreach events, school-based health initiatives, and special projects to enhance public health and program visibility.
  • Collaborate and coordinate seamlessly with staff mental health providers to deliver excellent clinical service, as well as with school principals, teachers, and administrators.
  • Utilize specialized clinical knowledge to handle mental health crises and emergencies efficiently and make age-appropriate, population-specific clinical decisions based on chronological and developmental needs.
Requirements
  • Doctorate in clinical, counseling, school, or neuropsychology, or completion of a re-specialization program in clinical psychology from an accredited institution. Must include one pre-doctoral year of satisfactory full-time supervised experience or completion of an APA-approved internship.
  • Minimum of 1 year of full-time post-doctoral experience under the supervision of a qualified licensed psychologist or psychiatrist in an approved clinical, hospital, or school setting.
  • Valid, unrestricted New York State Psychologist License.
  • Formal Review and Approval by the Montefiore Medical Center CMO.
  • Comprehensive, expert knowledge of mental health practices, diagnostic procedures (DSM), and specialized patient management.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt care based on psychological and developmental differences across specific age groups, including formulating tailored clinical treatment plans.
  • Strong computer proficiency and technology skills, alongside the proven ability to function independently and exercise sound judgment in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Must have the ability and willingness to travel throughout the Bronx, NY, and work dynamically within NYC DOE public schools. During school holiday periods, staff members who choose to work may be temporarily stationed at designated MMG or MMC locations to perform administrative or clinical duties for the School Health program.
  • Ability to perform sedentary work, involving sitting most of the time, with occasional walking and standing required to safely manage clinical care.
