Job summary

The GEO Group, a global leader in evidenced-based rehabilitation, is seeking a licensed Psychologist to evaluate, diagnose, and treat inmates and residents in a correctional setting. You will supervise staff, coordinate mental health services, and contribute to program quality in a challenging environment.

Qualifications include a PhD or PsyD in Psychology, active state licensure, and preferred 2 years in correctional work.

Qualifications

  • PhD or PsyD in Psychology from an accredited University.
  • Current license in Psychology in the state where the facility is located or licensure in accordance with contract requirements.
  • Two years of correctional work experience is preferred.
  • Must hold a current license in Psychology in the state where the facility is located.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

Responsibilities

  • The Psychologist evaluates inmates/detainees/residents for mental, emotional and behavioral disorders and provides diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
  • Evaluates mental status and severity to determine transfer/observation needs.
  • Provides psychotherapy or counseling for psychological disorders or mental illness.
  • Refers to psychiatrists or licensed professionals for medication management as needed.
  • Monitors psychotropic medication and educates staff on suicide risk factors and prevention.

Responsibilities

Summary:The Psychologist evaluates inmates/detainees/residents (I/D/R) for mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. Diagnoses disorders and determines the appropriate course of treatment. Responsible for directing and coordinating mental health functions as well as supervising and training staff members.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Psychologist performs psychological evaluation on I/D/R population for mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. Provides appropriate diagnosis based on history and presenting symptoms and makes appropriate treatment recommendations.
  • The Psychologist evaluates I/D/R’s mental status and severity of symptoms in determining the need for transfer to a higher level of care or placement under observation due to suicide risk or inability to adjust within regular population due to severity of symptoms.
  • Provides psychotherapy or counseling for the treatment of psychological disorders or mental illness.
  • The Psychologist makes appropriate referrals as necessary to a psychiatrist or other licensed professional who specializes in prescribing psychotropic medication.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of the psychotropic medications, monitors medication compliance, and makes referrals to the appropriate licensed medical professional should the I/D/R exhibit possible medication side effects.
  • The Psychologist instructs staff and officers in recognizing suicide risk factors and subsequent prevention techniques.
  • Provides in-service education for medical and correctional staff as required. Performs and trains staff on crisis intervention techniques as required.
  • The Psychologist performs administrative duties in keeping accurate records of I/D/R encounters, documenting all services provided, filling out required reports and analyses as required.
  • Consults with the Physician or Psychiatrist as needed for the proper health care needs of the I/D/R.
  • The Psychologist participates in review of the quality of care provided.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD or PsyD in Psychology from an accredited University.
  • Current license in Psychology in the State in which the facility is located or licensure/certification in accordance with the contract requirements.
  • Two (2) years of correctional work experience is preferred.
  • Must hold a current license or certification in Psychology in the state in which the facility is located. Maintains a current copy of license on file at the facility at all times.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age or older.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently: Lift or carry up to 10 lbs.; walk, stand, bend, stoop and sit.
  • Occasionally: Lift or carry/push or pull up to 40 lbs. Climb, reach above shoulder level and work with machinery.
