Job summary

VitalCore Health Strategies is seeking a Psychiatric Technician to monitor patients under close observation at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna, DE.

The role supports a safe, therapeutic environment and requires meticulous documentation of patient behavior and changes in condition. Responsibilities include continuous observation, reporting safety concerns, and maintaining professional boundaries while collaborating with nursing and security staff.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma required; associate degree in human services preferred.
• Experience in behavioral health or healthcare preferred.
• Ability to observe and document patient behavior accurately.
• Ability to follow safety procedures and maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

• Provide continuous visual observation of patients on Psychiatric Close Observation.
• Maintain a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
• Document patient behavior, activities, and changes in condition as per procedures.
• Report changes in patient behavior or safety concerns to nursing/clinical staff immediately.
• Follow procedures for patients at risk of self-harm, harm to others, or safety concerns.
• Maintain professional boundaries and interact with patients calmly and compassionately.
• Assist clinical staff in maintaining a structured patient environment.
• Adhere to facility, company, and security policies and confidentiality laws.
• Complete required documentation accurately and timely.
• Communicate with nursing, behavioral health, medical, and security personnel.
• Participate in training and maintain competency in duties.

Psychiatric Technician Position Summary

The Psychiatric Technician will provide continuous visual monitoring of patients who have been assessed to be at an increased risk of harm to self or others (otherwise known as Psychiatric Close Observation).

Psychiatric Technician Essential Duties

• Provide continuous, uninterrupted visual observation of patients placed on Psychiatric Close Observation.
• Maintain a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
• Closely monitor and document patient behavior, activities, and changes in condition in accordance with established procedures.
• Immediately report changes in patient behavior, safety concerns, or potential risks to nursing or clinical staff.
• Follow established procedures for patients identified as being at risk for self-harm, harm to others, or other safety concerns.
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and interact with patients in a respectful, calm, and compassionate manner.
• Assist clinical staff with maintaining a structured and orderly patient environment.
• Follow all facility, company, and security policies and procedures.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Complete required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
• Communicate effectively with nursing, behavioral health, medical, and security personnel.
• Participate in required training and maintain competency in assigned duties.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Psychiatric Technician Minimum Requirements

• High School Diploma (preference for an associate degree in human services, or working towards a degree in human services)
• Previous experience in behavioral health, mental health, healthcare, corrections, or a similar environment preferred.
• Ability to remain attentive and focused during extended periods of observation.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to remain calm and professional when working with patients experiencing behavioral or emotional distress.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions, safety procedures, and facility protocols.
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professional boundaries.
