Job summary

SWVMHI in Marion, VA seeks Psychiatric Care Technicians/CNAs to support its Nursing Services Team on 12-hour PM shifts. The role includes working weekends every other week, with shift differentials and holiday supplements.

You will assist nurses, monitor patient status, document observations in the electronic health record, and maintain a safe, therapeutic environment on adult acute, geriatric, and rehab units. CPR certification will be pursued during probation.

Qualifications

• Maintain CNA certification in good standing with the VA State Board of Nursing.
• Experience in psychiatric or long-term care settings preferred.
• Ability to read, write and speak English.

• Create healthy interpersonal interactions on adult acute admissions unit, geriatric unit, and Extended Rehabilitation Service unit.

• Demonstrate competencies as defined on the CNA competency assessment.

SWVMHI in Marion, VA is recruiting for 12-hour, PM Shift Psychiatric Care Technicians/CNAs to join its talented and dedicated Nursing Services Team.

Position Hours: 6:30 p.m.- 7:00 a.m. Working at Least Every Other Weekend

Psychiatric Care Technicians Assist Nurses By:

• Providing quality care as part of an interdisciplinary team
• Maintaining accountability in a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment
• Creating healthy interpersonal interactions on adult acute admissions unit, geriatric unit, and Extended Rehabilitation Service unit
• Observing and reporting feedback regarding interventions, treatments, behaviors, physical condition, emotional well-being, and other situations documenting and communicating using specialized training for promoting mental wellness recovery

KSAs and or Competencies required to successfully perform the work:

• Ability to distinguish between safe and unsafe patient behavior by observing, interacting, and listening
• Ability to read, write and speak in the English language
• Ability to observe, report and document changes in patients’ mental, physical and behavioral status
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions
• Ability to maintain all required orientation and annual competencies
• Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors, co-workers and patients from varied backgrounds using effective interpersonal skills
• Ability to recognize the need and ask for help or assistance in providing care and treatment
• Ability to give and receive effective feedback and perform as a member of a team
• Ability to administer CPR and perform Therapeutic Options approved physical interventions
• Ability to work overtime hours, rotating weekends, and holidays
• Ability to use email and electronic health records
• Will obtain certification as a C.N.A by the Virginia Board of Nursing within probationary period.
• Knowledge of basic treatment measures to promote mental health appropriate to the adult, developmentally disabled or impaired, and/or geriatric populations.

• Ability to work overtime in a staffing emergency.
• Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.
• Knowledge of personal care needs and activities of daily living.
• Ability to carry out responsibilities of the position.
• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively with others.
• Ability to turn, bend and lift non-ambulatory patients without restrictions.
• Ability to provide direct patient care under supervision of licensed nursing staff.
• Ability to demonstrate competencies as defined on the C.N.A. competency assessment.

Minimum Qualifications

Maintain CNA (Certified Nursing Aide) certification in good standing with the VA State Board of Nursing.

Additional Considerations

• Experience in a psychiatric, healthcare facility, acute care, long-term care or correction setting is preferred.
• Valid Driver's License preferred.
• High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred
