Job summary

Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor is seeking a compassionate psychiatric care worker to support an inpatient child unit, assisting with daily living activities, monitoring vitals, and documenting patient information in the health record. The role includes rotating safety checks and aiding families as needed.

You will contribute to a multidisciplinary team, participate in patient transport, and may provide 1:1 observation or therapeutic interventions under nursing supervision.

Qualifications

• Recent experience as a psychiatric care worker on an inpatient child psych unit or similar area.
• Proven record of reliable attendance and punctual shifts.
• In good standing with current employment status.

Responsibilities

• Support patients in activities of daily living and maintain safety and cleanliness.
• Take vital signs and monitor blood glucose as part of patient care.
• Communicate observations to the multidisciplinary team and document in the health record.
• Rotate between three roles performing safety checks and supporting the patient milieu.
• Provide therapeutic or physical interventions under nursing supervision.
• Transport patients to off-unit procedures or tests.
• Occasionally serve as a 1:1 attendant with vigilant observation.

Responsibilities

• Support patients in activities of daily living, including assistance with hygiene, ambulation, laundry, and environmental cleanliness and safety.
• Participate in patient care including taking vital signs and checking blood glucose levels.
• Communicate observations and relevant patient information to multidisciplinary team and document in patient health record as needed.
• Rotate between three different roles performing required safety checks, supporting the patient milieu, and working with patients and families in the neurodevelopmental subunit.
• Provide therapeutic and/or physical interventions under supervision of Nursing.
• Transport patients to off-unit procedures or tests.
• At times, serve as a 1:1 patient attendant by providing constant and vigilant observation of assigned patient.

Required Qualifications

• Recent experience as a psychiatric care worker (or like position) on an inpatient child psych unit (or like area).
• Evidence of a responsible work pattern including an outstanding attendance record and arriving on time for your shift.
• In good standing

Desired Qualifications

• A minimum of two years of college.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

This position consists of a 32 hour per week appointment. The schedule will include every other weekend with the shift position of eve shifts during the week and day shifts for the weekends.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment. This is a benefited position.

Background Screening
