Job summary

Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a Shop Monitor to oversee the prototyping facilities during weekend hours. The selected individual will mentor and supervise students and faculty in using fabrication equipment safely and effectively.

Responsibilities include monitoring shop hours, enforcing safety protocols, and assisting students with any fabrication-related questions. Candidates should have two or more years of experience in a fabrication facility and an associate’s degree or equivalent. Qualifications

  • Two or more years of relevant full-time experience in a professional fabrication facility.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience demonstrating comparable knowledge may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor shop open hours to ensure safe operation of equipment.
  • Enforce access and safety protocols for tools and equipment use.
  • Mentor and supervise students in the safe use of prototyping equipment.
  • Assist students with questions relating to fabrication, rapid prototyping, and woodworking.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and operation of fabrication shops.
