Job summary

Thorlabs is seeking an experienced CNC Programmer to operate and set up multi-axis milling and turning equipment. The role requires strong GibbsCAM proficiency, blueprint reading, and hands-on capability with 3- to 4-axis machines. You will mentor junior machinists and continuously improve prototype processes.

The position is based in Sterling, VA with potential work at other Thorlabs locations. High attention to quality, safety, and process documentation is essential.

Qualifications

• 7+ years in a CNC machining environment.
• 5+ years in a CNC programming role (GibbsCAM preferred).
• 3+ years in specialty prototype machining.
• CNC certification or trade school is a major plus.

Responsibilities

• Program highly complex prototype pieces on 4+ axis equipment using GibbsCAM.
• Lead advanced setups and troubleshooting on Vertical and Horizontal CNC Milling Machines (3 & 4 axis).
• Read blueprints and GD&T, interpret material properties and machining requirements.
• Inspect dimensions and ensure conformance to specifications.
• Mentor Level I machinists and document processes.

Purpose of the Position

Responsible for programming, set-up, and operation of CNC machines in compliance with inch and metric drawing specifications. Possess the ability operating and performing set ups on both vertical and horizontal milling machines as well as multi-axis mills and lathes. Responsible for the proper use and maintenance of all measuring tools and devices used in inspection of all components. Works under general supervision. Although the location of the position is in Sterling, VA, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Essential Job Functionsinclude the following, but are not limited to:

• Independently programs highly complex and unique prototype work pieces on 4+ axis equipment using GibbsCAM, optimizing machining strategies for efficiency and quality.
• Leads advanced set ups and troubleshooting on both Vertical and Horizontal CNC Milling Machines (3 & 4 axis).
• Experience with Okuma, Mazak, Haas, and Fadal controls.
• Proficient with manual programming (G codes/M codes).
• Machines and/or fabricating precision tools and fixturing to tight tolerances and complex geometries based on specifications, often requiring innovative solutions for one-off prototype projects.
• Solid understanding of mechanical design and dimensioning principles which includes reading blueprints and geometric tolerance comprehension.
• Understands material properties (rates of expansion, strength, hardness) and special machining requirements.
• Measures, inspects, and troubleshoots dimensions of finished work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications.
• Leads documentation creation, revision, and process improvements for prototype projects.
• Performs periodic machine maintenance such as, but not limited to dismantling or partly dismantling machines and performing repairs that mainly involve the use of hand tools in scraping and fitting parts.
• Comply with safety regulations and maintains clean and orderly work areas.
• Mentors and trains Level I machinists, sharing expertise to improve team capabilities.

• Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.

Physical Activities:

Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job-related equipment and tools.

Qualifications

Experience:

• Minimum 7 years of experience in a CNC machining environment
• Minimum 5 years of experience in a CNC programming role (GibbsCAM preferred)
• Minimum 3 years of experience with specialty prototype machining

Education:

• High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent work experience
• CNC certification or CNC Trade School, a major plus

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

• Knowledge of Lean Principles including “Just in Time”, and Setup Time Reduction a plus
• Strong sense of ownership and work ethic, written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient computer skills are required.
• Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere and comply with high quality standards.
• Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing priorities.

The estimated pay range for this role is $29.00/hour - $35.00/hour.
