Greensea IQ, based in Plymouth, MA, seeks a Prototype Engineer to drive early design concepts through first builds and manufacturing transfer. You will collaborate across Mechanical, Electrical, Software, and Manufacturing teams to ensure designs are producible, reliable, and scalable for full production.

The role requires hands-on build, testing, troubleshooting, and DFMA optimization, with a strong focus on quality, safety, and documentation practices in a fast‑paced hardware environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field.
• 5–7 years in product development, manufacturing engineering or similar.
• Hands-on experience building, testing, troubleshooting electromechanical products.
• Experience with BOMs, mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and test procedures.
• Experience with electromechanical assembly including soldering, crimping, wiring.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Prototype Engineer is a key member of the Hardware Engineering team at Greensea IQ, helping transform innovative marine robotics concepts into reliable, production-ready products. This hands‑on engineering role works across the full product development lifecycle, from early design concepts and engineering prototypes through first builds, testing, troubleshooting, and transition to manufacturing.

Collaborating with Mechanical, Electrical, Software, and Manufacturing Teams, the Prototype Engineer helps ensure that products are not only well designed, but can also be assembled, tested, and manufactured consistently, efficiently, and at scale.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support the development of product concepts, designs, and engineering requirements, providing practical input based on hands‑on build and manufacturing experience.
• Review and provide feedback on engineering documentation, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and test protocols/reports.
• Provide hands‑on guidance for design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA), identifying opportunities for poka‑yoke, part‑count reduction, simplified assembly, improved reliability, and reduced manufacturing costs.
• Build, troubleshoot, and test engineering prototypes and first‑build units, translating engineering designs into functional hardware.
• Develop initial assembly and test methods, work instructions, and supporting fixtures and tooling to enable consistent and repeatable builds.
• Serve as a subject matter expert during the transition from engineering to manufacturing, helping establish robust, scalable production processes, as well as training production personnel as needed.
• Support root cause investigations and corrective actions for field failures.
• Proactively identify opportunities for product and process improvements and help drive solutions from concept through implementation.
• Maintain a strong focus on quality, safety, and attention to detail while adhering to established engineering procedures and good manufacturing and documentation practices.
• All other responsibilities as reasonably assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 5-7 years of experience in product development, manufacturing engineering, test engineering, or a related engineering environment.
• Demonstrated hands‑on experience building, testing, troubleshooting, and improving complex electromechanical products.
• Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and developing engineering documentation, including mechanical drawings, Bills of Materials, electrical schematics, and test procedures.
• Experience with complex electromechanical assembly, including soldering, crimping, wiring, and the use of basic hand and power tools.
• Strong problem‑solving skills, with troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills, as well as the ability to identify problems and develop practical, durable solutions.
• Excellent attention to detail and a strong commitment to product quality and reliability.
• Exemplify a customer‑focused attitude, both end‑users and downstream, internal colleagues.
• Ability to effectively communicate across all levels of the organization, and collaborate with teammates across a range of skills, disciplines, and experience levels.

The candidate must be eligible to work in the United States. Travel expectations <10%. This position is based in Plymouth, MA and cannot be performed remotely. Annual salary range:$110-125k.
