Our global, diverse team would be happy to support you and challenge you to grow in new ways.

Transform the everyday with us!

Siemens Electrification and Automation is seeking a Protection, Control & Automation Panel Design Engineer with High Voltage Protection & Automation experience to design and develop sophisticated power automation and protection panels for critical substation systems. You will contribute as a hands-on design expert, integrating Siemens and third-party automation products to deliver innovative, high-impact solutions to our customers.

The Location & Lifestyle:

This role is based at our national headquarters in Wendell, North Carolina—located in the heart of the Research Triangle, just 20 minutes east of Raleigh. We offer a flexible hybrid work environment, with the opportunity to work from home up to two-three days per week when business needs allow. There may be times when more office presence is needed, but we strive to maintain that flexibility whenever possible.

For experienced engineers, this area offers an incredible quality of life: top-rated schools, a mild four-season climate, easy weekend access to mountains and the coast, and a highly favorable cost of living that allows your compensation to go much further. (Local candidates are encouraged to apply, and relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates).

You’ll make a difference by:
  • Driving the Design: Design electrical, mechanical, and system drawings for protection, control, and automation panels per customer specifications and guidelines.
  • Engineering the Logic: Develop logic diagrams and protection schemes based on technical drawings and detailed customer requirements.
  • Ensuring Detailed Execution: Prepare Factory & Site Acceptance Test (FAT & SAT) procedures for protection systems projects.
  • Leading and Mentoring: Provide technical guidance on projects, support team members in project activities, and collaborate with a team of specialists to meet industry standards.
  • Being the Expert Voice: Serve as a primary customer interface, providing problem-solving and commissioning support.
  • Supporting the Full Lifecycle: Provide technical support from design through implementation and commissioning, while occasionally assisting the sales team with scope development, estimates, and proposals.
You’ll win us over by having the following qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
  • Core Experience: Six (6) or more years of experience in power system protection, control, and automation engineering, including HV/MV utility applications, hands-on engineering execution, and technical leadership.
  • Panel Design & Documentation: Experience designing protection, control, and automation panels and developing engineering deliverables such as AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, sequence of operations, functional design specifications (FDS), and test procedures.
  • Protection Relays & Automation Systems: Applied knowledge of transmission and distribution protection relays and automation systems (Siemens, GE, SEL, ABB, or equivalent), including relay application, specification, design review, and associated engineering software.
  • Communications, Testing & Commissioning: Working knowledge of communication network technologies, hardware configuration, and protocols such as IEC 61850 (MMS/GOOSE/Sampled Values), DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, PROFINET, and PROFIBUS. Hands-on experience with commissioning, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), or Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
  • Engineering Tools: Proficiency with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, AUCOTEC Engineering Base, or similar engineering design software, as well as Microsoft Visio and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Standards & Technical Knowledge: Ability to read and interpret AC/DC schematics, one-line and three-line diagrams for medium- and high-voltage substations. Knowledge of ANSI/IEEE standards related to protection, control, and electrical panel design.
  • Travel: Willingness and ability to travel approximately 5% based on project assignments and customer requirements.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and must not require employment sponsorship now or in the future.
Preferred Qualifications: (The qualifications below are preferred, but not required)
  • Utility & Generation Protection Panel Design: Experience with transmission, distribution, and generation protection applications, including feeder, transformer, generator, bus, line differential, distance, transfer-trip, and interlocking schemes, as well as panel design for substations and power generation facilities.
