Job summary

RMS Energy is seeking a Protection and Controls (P&C) Field Technician/III to perform field testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of transmission and distribution protection systems.

You will work hands-on with relays, pilot channel systems, and substation control equipment across multiple sites, requiring travel and strict safety adherence.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in relay testing, commissioning, and substation relaying/control repair.
• 5+ years in leadership in project execution, relay settings coordination, or system integration.
• Familiarity with SCADA, SER, fault data, and automation systems.
• Proficient in test equipment, software tools, and wiring techniques.
• Ability to interpret electrical diagrams with accuracy.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.

Responsibilities

• Test protection and control relays (electromechanical, solid-state, microprocessor) and calibration.
• Troubleshoot and repair substation relaying and control equipment in field environments.
• Commission new substations and related systems including pilot wire and communication systems.
• Schedule and complete test activities efficiently with no service interruptions.
• Support field service personnel and maintain documentation aligned with client specs.
• Read, interpret, and execute tasks using electrical drawings and schematics.
• Follow strict safety and PPE protocols in hazardous environments.
• Work outdoors and indoors in utility environments.

We’re looking for aP&C Field TechnicianIIIto join our fast-growing team and perform field testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of transmission and distribution protection systems. You’ll work hands-on with relays, pilot channel systems, and substation control equipment, supporting project execution across multiple utility and industrial sites.

What You’ll Do:

• Test protection and control relays (electromechanical, solid-state, microprocessor), including voltage/current inputs, SCADA alarms, and calibration
• Troubleshoot and repair substation relaying and control equipment in field environments
• Commission new substations and related systems, including pilot wire, power line carrier, fiber optics, and communication/control systems
• Schedule and complete test activities efficiently and accurately without service interruptions
• Support field service personnel and maintain documentation aligned with client specifications
• Read, interpret, and execute tasks using electrical drawings and wiring schematics
• Follow strict safety and PPE usage protocols due to noise, electrical hazards, and elevated work areas
• Work outdoors and indoors in utility environments with strict safety protocols

The Experience We’re Looking For:

• 5+ years of experience in relay testing, commissioning, and substation relaying/control repair
• 5+ years of leadership experience in project execution, relay settings coordination, or system integration
• Familiarity with SCADA, SER, fault data, and automation systems
• Proficient in test equipment, software tools, and wiring techniques
• Ability to interpret electrical diagrams with accuracy
• Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects

Additional Requirements:

• Willingness to travel 50% or more, including overnight stays and weekend/holiday availability
• High school diploma or GED required
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
• Must pass a background check and drug/alcohol screening
• Ability to work in all weather conditions, at elevations over 100 ft, and in confined spaces
• Available for extended and irregular hours as needed
• Annual safety training and occasional out-of-state travel for complianceRequire good vision, hearing, and English proficiency for safe, effective communication in noisy environments

Bonus Points for:

• Associate's or bachelor’s degree in electrical technology, Power Systems, or Mechanical Engineering
• Hands‑on experience with relay testing software, fault analysis, or advanced P&C diagnostic tools
• Experience working with utilities, substations, and complex P&C systems
• Previous experience mentoring or leading field teams
