In this role, you will also contribute to other engineering areas including power quality analysis, installation, startup, maintenance, and repair.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop complete utility substation P&C engineering design packages, including AC one-line and three-line diagrams, DC schematics, logic and functional diagrams, panel layouts, interconnection diagrams, relaying equipment specifications and bill of materials.
  • Design, specification, setting calculation, and coordination of protective relaying and relay control schemes for both electromechanical and modern electronic relays.
  • Modeling, short circuit and overstressed breaker studies as well as the protective relaying recommendations for proposed generation interconnections to a client’s electrical system.
  • Ensure all relay settings activities, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with the company’s established policies and objectives, client design standards, and industry standards, including those from IEEE, IEC, and NERC.
  • Confidently and comfortably present technical solutions to key customers, responding in real time to technical concerns and answering questions in a knowledgeable, articulate manner.
  • Test protective relays, control devices, and communication links to ensure they function correctly before the systems go live.
  • Analyze fault records and waveforms to determine the cause, assess the performance of the protection systems, and identify any misoperations.
  • Prepare detailed documentation, including wiring diagrams, relay setting sheets, and control logic diagrams, to support maintenance and future upgrades.
  • Implement automatic controls for switchgear, transformers, and other equipment to maintain system stability and optimize performance.
  • Generate drawing packages and installation plans for electrical and substation equipment upgrades including protective relay replacements.
  • Analyze power quality data and event capture data to determine the cause of customer issues and provide recommendations for mitigation.
  • Review existing customer power systems and provide recommendations for improvement, upgrade, and/or expansion.
  • Create written specifications for electrical and substation equipment such as motor control centers, switchboards, switchgear, transformers, and circuit breakers.
  • Travel to job sites as needed to meet with customers, collect data, and direct and support installation and commissioning activities.
  • Assist the sales team with project scope and estimates, including traveling to the job site as necessary.
  • Must understand electrical system hazards and be able and willing to work safely around electrical equipment.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in electrical engineering or a closely related field, demonstrating expertise in developing complete utility substation P&C engineering design packages.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical systems, wiring, and all necessary equipment.
  • Licensure and Certifications: NETA 2, 3, or 4; FE/EIT; PE preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Experience with SKM PowerTools, ETAP, EasyPower, and/or other electrical modeling tools.
