Job description

Overview

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. SpaceX is actively developing technologies to enable human life on Mars, and the propulsion engineer (Raptor Test) role focuses on testing and qualification of Raptor engines and components for flight conditions. Engineers in this role design and execute unique development tests on an accelerated schedule, offering a variety of engineering challenges in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute tests at the engine and component level to evaluate hardware performance and survivability during the mission.
  • Own test campaigns: test plan creation, system activation, test operations, data review, and stand equipment design/fabrication.
  • Provide daily direction to technicians to fabricate and integrate test articles and stand equipment.
  • Develop and maintain test procedures, sequences, scripts, configuration files, and software.
  • Operate and troubleshoot data acquisition and control systems, wiring, and instrumentation (DAQ systems are primarily National Instruments based).
  • Operate and troubleshoot fluid and mechanical systems, including high-pressure gases and rocket propellants, cryogenics, structural components, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Operate mechanical systems such as test stand support structures, heat exchangers, vacuum pumps, tooling, and fluid components (valves, reliefs, burst disks, tubing, etc.).
  • Automate repetitive test operations to increase efficiency and safety.
  • Develop processes to increase testing capability and rates while maintaining high safety standards.
  • Identify system pitfalls and hazards; collaborate with design engineers to implement improvements for test stands and flight hardware.
  • Direct test console operations and supervise a team of technicians during test processes.
  • Analyze and review data using numerical data analysis tools to verify hardware performance.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute integration and testing processes; collaborate with design engineers to improve hardware.
  • Support resource management activities, including planning, parts, coordination, skilled labor coordination, and process verification.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of hands-on testing experience ( internships, clubs, or other hands-on activities qualify)
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Experience in production and test systems
  • Hands-on test and production facility, factory, or laboratory experience
  • Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to quickly think through and solve problems
  • Knowledge of aerospace structural, mechanical, or propulsion systems assembly and testing
  • Ability to utilize test instrumentation and control components (pressure transducers, thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, accelerometers, flow meters, load cells, relays, solenoid valves)
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals, reports, schematics
  • Knowledge of hazardous systems (cryogenic, flammable, hypergolic, pyrophoric) and high-pressure design and handling
  • Experience with CAD modeling (Unigraphics NX preferred), Teamcenter
  • Experience using test instrumentation and control components
Additional Requirements
  • Flight hardware work in tight quarters; physical dexterity required
  • Physical effort including extended standing/sitting and lifting up to 25 lbs
  • Environment with exposure to fumes, odors, and noise; possible extreme outdoor conditions
  • Hours vary with site operational needs; flexibility required
