POSITION OVERVIEW

The Project Manager is an experienced structural engineer responsible for the day-to-day management and execution of structural engineering projects under the oversight of a Project Executive. The Project Manager leads project teams and manages project scope, fee and budget, schedule, staffing, technical execution, coordination, client communication, and overall project performance from project initiation through construction.

Project Managers balance technical leadership with project management responsibilities and serve as the primary day-to-day point of contact for clients and project stakeholders. They are expected to anticipate project needs, identify potential issues, effectively direct project resources, and communicate with the Project Executive when significant technical, contractual, financial, schedule, or client-related issues arise.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage structural engineering projects from project initiation through design, documentation, permitting, and construction-phase services under the oversight of a Project Executive.
  • Establish and manage project scope, fee and budget, schedule, staffing, deliverables, and project execution plans in accordance with contractual requirements and client expectations.
  • Monitor project financial performance, including labor expenditures, remaining fee, staffing projections, and progress toward completion, and make adjustments to the project plan as necessary.
  • Understand the contracted scope of services and identify changes in scope, additional services, or client requests that may affect project fee or schedule. Communicate these items to the Project Executive and assist with developing appropriate additional service proposals.
  • Develop project schedules and establish internal milestones and priorities necessary to meet client and project deliverable dates.
  • Plan and coordinate project staffing and workload, including assigning work to Project Engineers and BIM/modeling team members based on project needs, schedule, and team capabilities.
  • Lead the day-to-day project team by communicating priorities, providing direction, monitoring progress, and ensuring engineering and BIM/modeling efforts remain coordinated.
  • Provide technical leadership for structural analysis and design and assist the project team with resolution of complex engineering, modeling, detailing, constructability, and coordination issues.
  • Review structural calculations, analysis models, drawings, specifications, and other engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, completeness, consistency, and conformance with project requirements and Apex standards.
  • Lead structural coordination with architects, MEP/FP consultants, contractors, fabricators, and other project participants and facilitate resolution of multidisciplinary coordination issues.
  • Review architectural, MEP/FP, and other discipline documents to understand project requirements, identify structural impacts and coordination issues, and ensure those items are addressed by the project team.
  • Lead external project meetings and effectively communicate structural design requirements, project status, coordination items, required information, schedule considerations, and engineering solutions.
  • Serve as the primary day-to-day point of contact for clients, architects, contractors, fabricators, consultants, and other project stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships through responsive communication, technical competence, dependable project execution, and an understanding of the client's priorities and project objectives.
  • Anticipate technical, coordination, staffing, schedule, financial, and project execution risks and develop strategies with the project team and Project Executive to address them.
  • Manage construction-phase engineering services, including RFIs, submittals, field conditions, design revisions, and other construction-related engineering activities.
  • Coordinate project QA/QC reviews and ensure appropriate reviews are completed at established project milestones and comments are incorporated into the project deliverables.
  • Provide technical and project guidance to Project Engineers and Associate Project Managers and support their continued technical and professional development.
  • Communicate project performance, significant design decisions, client concerns, scope changes, schedule risks, financial concerns, and other important project matters to the Project Executive.
  • Assist Project Executives with the development of project scopes, fee proposals, schedules, staffing plans, and pursuit strategies for new and existing clients.
  • Participate in Apex Technical Advisory Groups and contribute to the continued development of engineering standards, design tools, technical resources, project workflows, and lessons learned.
  • Support continuous improvement of Apex's project management, engineering, QA/QC, and project delivery processes.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure required.
  • Demonstrated experience managing structural engineering projects and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Advanced knowledge of structural analysis, structural systems, load paths, and the design of steel, concrete, masonry, foundations, and other applicable structural systems.
  • Advanced working knowledge of applicable building codes, ASCE 7, and structural material design standards.
  • Strong proficiency with structural analysis and design software and the ability to review and evaluate complex structural analysis models and engineering calculations.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural, structural, MEP/FP, and other discipline construction documents and identifying structural impacts and coordination requirements.
  • Demonstrated understanding of project scope, contracts, fees, budgets, schedules, staffing, additional services, and project financial performance.
  • Ability to develop project work plans, establish priorities, assign work, monitor progress, and adjust resources to meet project requirements.

  • Ability to lead external project meetings and effectively coordinate with clients, architects, consultants, contractors, fabricators, and other project participants.
  • Ability to identify project risks, evaluate potential solutions, make informed decisions within the Project Manager's role, and elevate significant issues to the Project Executive when appropriate.
  • Excellent communication skills are required, both verbal and written.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects while maintaining quality and effective communication.
