Job summary

Tom Trese Networking LLC is seeking a Project Engineer to support underground wet utilities projects in the Greater Los Angeles area. The role involves hands‑on field work, coordinating with project teams, and ensuring timely delivery of projects up to $10 million in value.

Qualifications

  • 2–4 years of field experience with a self-performing contractor specializing in underground wet utilities.
  • Preference for candidates experienced in domestic water systems.
  • Proficiency in pipeline installation methods, waterworks materials, traffic control, shoring systems and trench restoration.
  • Experience in project documentation, scheduling, change management and cost tracking.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

  • Coordinate field operations including pipeline installation, shoring, traffic control and trench restoration.
  • Manage RFIs, change orders, permitting, utility notifications and daily reports.
  • Oversee subcontractors, material orders and time‑and‑materials tracking.
  • Review and interpret project plans, drawings and specifications.
  • Maintain safety standards and company procedures.
  • Prepare project documentation and correspondence.
  • Support client relationships and project profitability.

Project Engineer - Underground Wet Utilities

Location: Greater Los Angeles, Orange County, Inland Empire
Salary: Commensurate with experience

General Summary

The Project Engineer supports the Project Manager in the overall direction, coordination, and completion of underground wet utility and utility plant construction projects—typically up to $10 million in value. This role requires hands‑on field involvement, technical problem-solving, and collaboration with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams to ensure successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support Project Manager with planning, scheduling, and executing daily project activities.

  • Coordinate field operations, including pipeline installation, shoring, traffic control, and trench restoration.

  • Manage RFIs, change orders, permitting, utility notifications, and daily reports.

  • Oversee subcontractors, material orders, and time-and-materials tracking.

  • Review and interpret project plans, drawings, and specifications.

  • Maintain compliance with safety standards and company procedures.

  • Prepare project documentation and correspondence using professional, grammatically correct language.

  • Assist in maintaining strong client relationships and project profitability.

Requirements
  • Experience: Minimum 2-4 years of field experience with a self-performing contractor specializing in underground wet utilities.

  • Preference for candidates experienced in domestic water systems.

  • Strong working knowledge of:

    • Pipeline installation methods

    • Waterworks materials and systems

    • Traffic control, shoring systems, and trench restoration

  • Proficiency in project documentation, scheduling, change management, and cost tracking.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management preferred.

  • Equivalent field experience in underground construction may be substituted in lieu of degree.

Software Proficiency
  • Required: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Preferred Experience In:

    • CPM Scheduling (Primavera SureTrak, P3, or P6)

    • Bluebeam (PDF markup & management)

    • InEight Hard Dollar Estimating

    • Microsoft Visio or AutoCAD

    • RapidPlan or similar traffic control design software
