Job summary

BKF Engineers is seeking an experienced transportation engineer to design and coordinate roadway and multimodal projects in California. The role involves creating geometric designs, drainage plans, and traffic signal work while collaborating with agencies and stakeholders.

The ideal candidate has 3+ years in transportation engineering, proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, and familiarity with SignCAD/AGI/Synchro/SimTraffic. Some travel to BKF offices and client sites is expected.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in transportation engineering with a focus on roadway and multimodal design.
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Experience with SignCAD, AGI 32, or Synchro/SimTraffic is highly desirable.
  • EIT certification is highly preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with internal teams and public agencies.
  • Occasional travel between BKF offices and client sites.
  • Must be able to talk, hear, and operate a computer, keyboard and mouse.
  • Must occasionally lift up to 20 pounds with accommodations.
  • Travel to other BKF locations and client sites may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Design and coordinate transportation infrastructure projects (roadways, roundabouts, curbs, ADA ramps).
  • Coordinate traffic engineering tasks (signal design, markings, signage).
  • Prepare geometric design plans and profiles per standards.
  • Develop drainage, grading, and stormwater plans for corridors.
  • Prepare technical plans and specifications for projects.
  • Coordinate with project managers, agency staff, and stakeholders.
  • Support project delivery from planning through bidding and construction.

Job description

  • Design and coordinate transportation infrastructure projects including roadways, corridors, roundabouts, curbs, retaining walls, overpasses, transit facilities, and ADA curb ramps
  • Design and coordinate traffic engineering projects including signal design, pavement marking/striping, signage, and multimodal corridor improvements
  • Prepare geometric design plans and profiles in compliance with Caltrans, local, and regional standards
  • Develop grading, drainage, and stormwater management plans for transportation corridors
  • Design transportation-related utility systems and coordinate with public agencies and utility providers
  • Develop quantity takeoffs and cost estimates
  • Integrate multimodal and sustainable design elements such as complete streets, green infrastructure, and ADA compliance
  • Apply Federal, State (e.g. Caltrans), City, and County codes
  • Prepare conceptual design studies and alternatives analyses for roadway and multimodal improvements
  • Support project delivery from planning and design through bidding and construction support
  • Prepare technical plans and specifications
  • Coordinate with project managers, agency staff, multidisciplinary teams, stakeholders, and public agency clients
  • Manage project tasks with increasing levels of independence
Requirements
  • 3+ years of experience in transportation engineering, with a focus on the design and development of roadway systems, multimodal corridors, roundabouts, curbs, signal design, signing/striping, traffic control, transit facilities, etc.
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program
  • Must be proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Experience with SignCAD, AGI 32, or Synchro/Simtraffic is highly desirable
  • EIT certification is highly preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners, including public agencies, consultants, and community stakeholders
  • Occasional travel required between BKF offices and client site
  • Must be able to regularly talk, hear and operate a computer, keyboard and mouse
  • Must occasionally lift, pull/push and carry up to 20 pounds with accommodations
  • Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds at a low or moderate level consistent with an office setting
  • Ability to work in a high-stress, fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
  • Travel to other BKF locations and client sites may be required
