Job description

Project Engineer - Structural or Mechanical

At JH Kelly, we're seeking driven, detail-oriented Project Engineers to support the successful execution of construction projects throughout the Treasure Valley market. We are currently hiring for two opportunities within our Boise Operations team: one focused on Structural projects and one focused on Mechanical projects.

In this role, you will work closely with Project Managers and field teams, playing a key part in keeping projects on track through scheduling support, cost tracking, documentation management, technical coordination, and problem-solving across multiple stakeholders.

This position puts you at the center of dynamic construction projects supporting cutting-edge semiconductor, data center, commercial, and industrial developments while gaining hands‑on experience in project delivery from preconstruction through closeout. You'll help ensure work is planned, executed safely, and completed to the highest quality standards.

We're looking for candidates who are eager to apply strong technical fundamentals, critical thinking skills, and a collaborative mindset in a fast‑paced construction environment. Whether your background is in structural steel, miscellaneous metals, fabrication, erection, mechanical systems, process piping, industrial construction, engineering, or construction management, we'd like to hear from you.

Here’s a deeper dive into what you’ll take on:

Design Interpretation & RFI Management

  • Compare models, specs, P&IDs, and drawings to identify conflicts or missing information.
  • Write and manage clear, technically sound RFIs, proposing solutions and following through to resolution.
  • Work closely with project teams, design professionals, clients, and trade partners to clarify design intent and support successful project execution.
  • Assist in resolving technical issues throughout fabrication and field installation phases.

Work Package Development

  • Create detailed, field‑ready work packages for procurement, fabrication, pre‑assembly, rigging, installation and testing activities.
  • Use tools like Autodesk Construction Cloud, Revizto, Navisworks, Stratus, and Bluebeam to organize and communicate the scope clearly.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Superintendents, and field leadership to align work packages with project schedules and milestone dates.
  • Support material tracking, procurement activities, and project documentation efforts.

Field Engineering Support

  • Serve as a technical resource for field supervision, responding to questions, resolving design issues, and supporting construction activities.
  • Coordinate with fabrication shops, vendors, subcontractors, and field crews to ensure work is executed according to plan.
  • Provide technical support and documentation for lift plans, rigging activities, installation sequencing, construction work packages, and QA/QC inspections.
  • Participate in pull planning, Last Planner sessions, and other collaborative planning efforts to support field execution.

  • Collaborate across structural, mechanical, and multi‑discipline project teams to support successful project delivery.
  • Mentor interns and less experienced team members while fostering a positive, high‑trust team environment.
  • Show up as a calm, consistent, and reliable partner committed to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Safety & Quality
  • Ensure, follow, and promote company safety and quality protocols.
  • Support jobsite safety initiatives and participate in planning activities that prioritize safe execution of work.
