Job summary

Stanley Black & Decker Inc. in Towson, MD is seeking a Project Engineer specializing in Model Based Design for electric motors. This hybrid role requires onsite work in Towson three days per week and offers a path to lead motor modeling efforts using MATLAB/Simulink and FEM tools.

You'll develop and calibrate electromagnetic and thermal models, simulate and validate designs, mentor engineers, and collaborate across functions to advance electric motor technology and regulatory readiness.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering; PhD preferred.
  • 5+ years in electromagnetic and thermal design of motors with model-based methods.
  • Experience with 2D/3D finite element analysis for motor design.
  • Modeling 3-phase inverters including thermal aspects.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical system thermal modeling using lumped parameters.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink and model-based development.
  • Familiarity with MIL, SIL, and HIL testing environments.
  • Experience with field-oriented control for brushless motors.
  • Knowledge of Li-ion battery modeling is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Create robust motor models using MATLAB/Simulink and FEM tools.
  • Develop calibration processes for electromagnetic and thermal models.
  • Simulate and test motor models to identify issues early.
  • Modify electromagnetic design based on learning before prototyping.
  • Establish workflows for electrical system modeling within the team.
  • Generate a motor and electrical parts library for system-level modeling.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and research institutions.
  • Document control strategies, simulation results, and validation processes.
  • Support certification and regulatory compliance for global deployment.

The Job
  • Creating robust, well documented electric motor models using model-based engineering tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, Twin Builder).

  • Developing and implementing calibration processes for electromagnetic and thermal models of electric motors.

  • Simulating and testing (verifying) these motor models to find issues in early design processes.

  • Modify electro-magnetic design of the motor based on early learning to correct the issues before physical prototyping.

  • Establishing and keeping workflows and best practices for electrical system modeling within the team.

  • Generate robust motor and electrical part library that can be used by System level modelling teams.

  • Mentoring and training engineers in model-based design and controls engineering.

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and research institutions to drive technological advancements.

  • Documenting control strategies, simulation results, and validation processes specific to Electrical System.

  • Supporting certification and regulatory compliance for global deployment.

The Person
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field (PhD preferred).

  • 5+ years of experience in electromagnetic and thermal design of motors, with ability in model-based design.

  • Proven experience with 2D and 3D finite element analysis tools for motor design.

  • Experience in modeling 3-phase inverters, including thermal aspects.

  • Strong knowledge of electrical system thermal modeling using lumped parameter circuits.

  • Ability in MATLAB/Simulink and model-based development methodologies.

  • Familiarity with MIL, SIL, and HIL testing environments.

  • Experience with field-oriented control methods for brushless motor control (highly preferred).

  • Knowledge of modelling of Lithium-ion battery system is a plus.

The Salary range for this position is $90,000.00 - $144,900.00
