Job summary

Preston Companies offers a Project Engineer Intern position to gain hands-on experience supporting underground utility construction projects from pre-construction planning through project closeout.

You will work alongside Project Managers, Superintendents, and field teams on coordination, scheduling, procurement, documentation, costs, and reporting while gaining exposure to daily construction management tasks.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering.
• Strong interest in construction project management and field coordination.
• Ability to learn and apply basic planning and scheduling concepts.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Willingness to work in a fast-paced construction environment.
• Attention to detail and safety-conscious mindset.
• Ability to read project drawings and specifications is a plus.
• Basic computer literacy for documentation and reporting.
• U.S. work authorization; eligible for internship program.
• Availability to support Bay Area projects, including Milpitas, Palo Alto, San Jose and Berkeley.

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning, coordination, and execution of underground utility projects.
• Review plans, specifications, estimates, budgets, and material quantities to support readiness.
• Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, trucking companies, and field personnel for timely execution.
• Support preparation of project documentation, including purchase orders, subcontracts, submittals, permits, safety plans, and project logs.
• Help monitor project schedules, production, costs, and progress while supporting change order documentation.
• Attend project meetings and collaborate with PMs, Superintendents, Foremen, and other team members.
• Review field reports, timecards, production data, and documentation for accuracy and timely processing.
• Maintain project records, including as‑built drawings, photographs, closeout documents, and other project files.
• Build positive working relationships with project owners, inspectors, subcontractors, and internal teams.
• Perform other related duties as assigned in support of project and business objectives.
