POSITION OVERVIEW
The Project Engineer II is a developing structural engineer who has established a foundation in structural analysis and design and is progressing toward greater technical independence. Typically having two to four years of experience, the Project Engineer II works under the direction of Project Executives and Project Managers while performing increasingly complex structural analysis, design, and documentation.
At this level, engineers are expected to build upon the fundamental skills developed as a Project Engineer I by expanding their knowledge of structural systems, developing proficiency with Apex's preferred design software, gaining experience with building analysis models, and developing a stronger understanding of construction documents and how structural systems are represented within them.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform structural analysis and design of increasingly complex structural components and systems with guidance from Project Managers and more experienced engineers.
- Develop gravity and lateral building analysis models using Apex's preferred structural analysis and design software, including three-dimensional models for typical building structures.
- Develop building loading within structural analysis models, including gravity, wind, seismic, snow, rain, and other applicable loads based on ASCE 7 and project-specific design criteria.
- Evaluate structural load paths and transfer forces and reactions between slabs, beams, columns, walls, lateral systems, foundations, connections, and other structural components.
- Review structural analysis results for reasonableness and begin identifying unexpected forces, reactions, deflections, or behavior that may require additional evaluation or guidance.
- Apply applicable building codes and material design standards to the analysis and design of structural systems and components and develop greater proficiency in locating and interpreting applicable code provisions.
- Prepare organized structural calculations and engineering documentation that clearly communicate design assumptions, loading, analysis methods, and design results for review by more experienced engineers.
- Continue developing the ability to read and understand architectural and structural construction documents and use information contained within those documents to perform assigned structural design.
- Develop structural design information for incorporation into project drawings and models, including member sizes, geometry, elevations, reactions, loads, foundation requirements, and typical structural details.
- Assist BIM/modeling team members with routine engineering information needed to develop structural drawings and models and review assigned portions of the documents to verify that basic engineering information has been incorporated correctly.
- Perform engineering reviews of assigned portions of structural drawings and models for consistency with calculations and design intent under the guidance of the Project Manager or more experienced engineer.
- Review shop drawings, submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), and other construction-phase documentation with oversight from the Project Manager or more experienced engineer.
- Identify technical questions, unusual analysis results, missing design information, or areas requiring additional engineering direction and communicate them to the Project Manager or appropriate senior engineer.
- Actively participate in internal project meetings to discuss assigned design work, analysis results, technical questions, and information needed to progress the engineering.
- Attend external project meetings when appropriate for continued professional development and exposure to project coordination, client communication, and construction issues. External communication on behalf of Apex remains under the direction of the Project Manager or Project Executive.
- Apply Apex's engineering standards, design procedures, calculation requirements, QA/QC processes, documentation practices, and project delivery procedures with increasing proficiency.
- Review and incorporate technical comments from Project Managers, Project Executives, and senior engineers and develop the ability to recognize and correct routine engineering issues before submitting work for review.
- Communicate progress on assigned engineering work and proactively seek additional technical guidance or clarification when needed.
- Continue developing knowledge of constructability, fabrication, erection, and construction practices and how those considerations influence structural design decisions.
- Provide technical assistance to Project Engineer I team members on fundamental engineering calculations and use of Apex's design tools when requested by the Project Manager or senior engineer.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university.
- Master’s degree in civil or structural engineering is a plus.
- Typically two to four years of relevant structural engineering experience.
- Progress toward obtaining Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure, as applicable.
- Demonstrated knowledge of structural load paths, load development, structural analysis, and the design of common structural components and systems.
- Working knowledge of ASCE 7 and the ability to determine and apply typical gravity, wind, seismic, snow, rain, and other applicable building loads.
- Developing knowledge of applicable building codes and structural material standards and the ability to locate, interpret, and apply applicable provisions with guidance for more complex requirements.
- Developing proficiency with Apex's preferred structural analysis and design software, including the ability to develop analysis models for typical structural systems.
- Ability to evaluate structural analysis results and recognize when forces, reactions, deflections, or structural behavior appear inconsistent with expectations and require further review.
- Developing ability to read and understand architectural and structural construction documents and locate information necessary to perform assigned structural engineering tasks.
- Ability to prepare clear, organized structural calculations and effectively document design assumptions and engineering decisions.
- Excellent communication skills are required, both verbal and written.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to incorporate technical feedback and review comments and apply lessons learned to future engineering work.
- Continued desire to expand technical knowledge, engineering judgment, software proficiency, and understanding of building design and construction.
