Job description

Position Overview:

The Project Engineer II is a developing structural engineer who has established a foundation in structural analysis and design and is progressing toward greater technical independence. Typically having two to four years of experience, the Project Engineer II works under the direction of Project Executives and Project Managers while performing increasingly complex structural analysis, design, and documentation.

At this level, engineers are expected to build upon the fundamental skills developed as a Project Engineer I by expanding their knowledge of structural systems, developing proficiency with Apex's preferred design software, gaining experience with building analysis models, and developing a stronger understanding of construction documents and how structural systems are represented within them.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform structural analysis and design of increasingly complex structural components and systems with guidance from Project Managers and senior engineers.
  • Develop gravity and lateral building analysis models using Apex’s preferred structural analysis and design software, including three-dimensional models for typical building structures.
  • Develop and apply building loads within structural analysis models, including gravity, wind, seismic, snow, rain, and other applicable loads in accordance with ASCE 7 and project-specific criteria.
  • Evaluate structural load paths and the transfer of forces and reactions between slabs, beams, columns, walls, lateral systems, foundations, connections, and other structural components.
  • Review structural analysis results for reasonableness and identify unexpected forces, reactions, deflections, or structural behavior requiring additional evaluation or guidance.
  • Apply applicable building codes and material design standards to structural analysis and design while developing greater proficiency in locating, interpreting, and applying code provisions.
  • Prepare clear, organized structural calculations and engineering documentation that communicate design assumptions, loading, analysis methods, and design results.
  • Read and interpret architectural and structural construction documents and use project information to perform assigned structural engineering and design tasks.
  • Develop structural design information for incorporation into project drawings and models, including member sizes, geometry, elevations, reactions, loads, foundation requirements, and typical structural details.
  • Provide engineering information to BIM and modeling team members and review assigned portions of drawings and models to verify that design information has been incorporated accurately.
  • Perform engineering reviews of assigned portions of structural drawings and models for consistency with calculations and design intent under the guidance of the Project Manager or senior engineer.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), and other construction-phase documentation with appropriate oversight.
  • Identify technical questions, unusual analysis results, missing information, and other issues requiring additional engineering direction and communicate them to the appropriate Project Manager or senior engineer.
  • Participate in internal project meetings to discuss assigned design work, analysis results, technical questions, and project information needed to advance engineering tasks.
  • Attend external project meetings when appropriate to gain experience with project coordination, client communication, and construction-related issues. External communication on behalf of Apex remains under the direction of the Project Manager or Project Executive.
  • Apply Apex’s engineering standards, design procedures, calculation requirements, QA/QC processes, documentation practices, and project delivery procedures with increasing proficiency.
  • Incorporate technical comments and review feedback from Project Managers, Project Executives, and senior engineers and develop the ability to identify and correct routine engineering issues before submitting work for review.
  • Communicate progress on assigned engineering work and proactively seek technical guidance or clarification when needed.
  • Continue developing knowledge of constructability, fabrication, erection, and construction practices and their impact on structural design decisions.
  • Provide technical assistance to Project Engineer I team members on fundamental engineering calculations and the use of Apex’s design tools when requested by a Project Manager or senior engineer.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is a plus.
  • Typically two to four years of relevant structural engineering experience.
  • Engineer Intern (EI/EIT) certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated progress toward obtaining Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure, as applicable.
  • Demonstrated understanding of structural load paths, load development, structural analysis, and the design of common structural components and systems.
  • Working knowledge of ASCE 7 and the ability to determine and apply typical gravity, wind, seismic, snow, rain, and other applicable building loads.
  • Working knowledge of applicable building codes and structural material standards, with the ability to locate and apply relevant provisions with guidance on more complex requirements.
  • Developing proficiency with Apex’s preferred structural analysis and design software and the ability to develop analysis models for typical structural systems.
  • Ability to review structural analysis results and recognize forces, reactions, deflections, or structural behavior that may require additional evaluation.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural construction documents and locate information necessary to perform assigned engineering tasks.
  • Ability to prepare clear, organized structural calculations and document design assumptions, analysis methods, and engineering decisions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to receive, incorporate, and apply technical feedback and review comments to improve future engineering work.
  • Demonstrated initiative and willingness to expand technical knowledge, engineering judgment, software proficiency, and understanding of building design and construction.
