Job summary

Kier + Wright is seeking a Project Engineer I (Land Development) in Sacramento, CA to support engineering teams on diverse projects. You will prepare civil design plans, develop drawings from sketches, and coordinate with technicians to ensure constructible, compliant designs.

The role emphasizes learning, collaboration with private consultants and public agencies, and delivering accurate, timely design work for commercial, industrial, and residential developments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience; 2025-2026 graduates welcome.
  • 0-5 years in land development.
  • EIT or exam hopeful preferred.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and Bluebeam preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out tasks assigned by Project Lead and engineering team.
  • Develop working drawings for civil design plans in AutoCAD Civil 3D from sketches.
  • Use engineering judgment and seek guidance when needed.
  • Manage personal time to meet project obligations (budget, quality, schedule).
  • Provide accurate design for on-site and off-site improvements for planning and construction ready for construction.
  • Design grading, drainage, utilities and stormwater treatment with minimal input from engineer of record.
  • Perform civil engineering calculations, SWPPPs and other reports.
  • Interact effectively with peers, clients, and sub-consultants.

PROJECT ENGINEER I (LAND DEVELOPMENT) - Sacramento, CA
What we're looking for?

In this role, the Project Engineer provides engineering support to project teams. At this level, this individual is gaining experience and will be able to take on some tasks without supervision. The individual must understand, design and independently prepare technical engineering plans and effectively collaborate with technicians to complete technical design plans. The project engineer will provide assistance in all technical aspects of projects, conduct engineering research, assessments, and coordinate with private consultants and public agencies.

What you will do
  • Carries out tasks assigned by the Project Lead and engineering team.
  • Develops working drawings for civil design plans in AutoCAD Civil 3D (grading, drainage, utility, stormwater management and street frontage improvements) from sketches.
  • Uses engineering judgment to perform duties and knows when to ask questions, seek assistance or perform independent research.
  • Manages personal time allotted to various tasks in order to meet obligations of one or more projects, including budget, quality and schedule.
  • Provide accurate design of on-site and off-site improvements for the planning and construction of commercial, industrial, and/or high-density residential projects that are ready for construction.
  • Can provide accurate design of grading, drainage, utilities and stormwater treatment with minimal input from engineer of record.
  • Performs civil engineering calculations, SWPPP’s and other engineering reports.
  • Effectively interacts with peers, clients, and sub-consultants.
What you have
Education + Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or an equivalent level of experience (2025-2026 Graduates are welcome to apply)
  • 0-5 years of experience in land development
  • Engineering in training (EIT) or scheduled to sit for exam is preferred
  • General knowledge of computers, Microsoft office, Adobe, Internet applications, etc.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and Bluebeam, preferred
  • Additional software experience a plus, e.g., Agtek, Hydrology/Hydraulic Software
Physical Requirements and/or Working Conditions
  • Prolonged periods of sitting (up to 8 hours a day for office staff)
  • Interacting with technology (computer, cellphone, etc.)
  • Ability to lift and/or carry items ( up to 20 lbs.)
  • Prolonged periods of standing/walking (field checks)
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions (field checks)
  • Occasional travel e.g. driving to offices, jobsites, client meetings, etc.
