Project Engineer – Heavy Civil Construction

A well-established Pennsylvania-based heavy civil contractor is seeking to add a Project Engineer to the group to support complex infrastructure and transportation construction projects. This role plays a critical part in pre-construction planning, technical design support, and field execution for large-scale public and private works.

The ideal candidate brings strong analytical ability, sound engineering judgment, and a collaborative mindset to support safe, efficient, and constructible project delivery.

This role offers exposure to complex infrastructure projects, hands‑on involvement in field and design collaboration, growth opportunities aligned with licensure and experience, and a team‑oriented environment focused on safety, quality, and innovation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide engineering and technical support to active heavy/highway construction projects
  • Assist in early‑phase planning by evaluating design concepts, identifying risks, and assessing constructability
  • Develop engineering calculations, detailed sketches, and construction drawings for field implementation and client review
  • Prepare and review temporary works designs
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and assist with material tracking and cost awarenessReview shop drawings and coordinate technical items with subcontractors and vendors
  • Participate in site visits and project meetings to support field teams and ensure alignment between design intent and execution
  • Contribute to pre‑task planning and support field leadership in maintaining a safe job‑site environment
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with estimating, operations, and fabrication teams as needed
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or closely related discipline)
  • Experience in heavy civil, transportation, or infrastructure construction preferred
  • Understanding temporary works design and construction sequencing is desirable
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to collaborate with field teams, management, and external stakeholders
  • Working knowledge of project scope, schedule, and budget impacts
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
  • Detail‑oriented with the ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities
  • Capable of working independently while contributing effectively to a team environment
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and applicable codes
  • Strong safety awareness and ability to identify risk conditions
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar drafting software
