Job summary

ACCIONA is seeking a Project Engineer – Drainage to support field construction and engineering coordination for roadway drainage systems on the SR400 Express Lanes project near Atlanta, GA. You will work with superintendents, subcontractors, survey crews and engineers to track installation, resolve field conflicts and ensure drainage work meets plans, while adhering to safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Support field construction of drainage systems and related components.
• Coordinate drainage activities with Superintendents, foremen, subcontractors, survey crews, earthwork and utility teams.
• Review drainage plans, profiles, pipe schedules, and elevations to ensure accuracy.
• Verify drainage structure locations, pipe alignments, invert elevations, slopes, and cover requirements.
• Coordinate excavation, trench protection, bedding, pipe installation and backfill.
• Sequence drainage installation with earthwork, roadway, pavement and structures.
• Identify and resolve conflicts between drainage and utilities or existing infrastructure.
• Assist in tying into existing drainage systems and verify elevations.
• Assist in groundwater, soil and rock-related coordination and issue resolution.
• Coordinate temporary drainage, dewatering, erosion-control measures, and storm-event prep.
• Track quantities, deliveries, progression, testing, inspections, and RFIs.

The SR400 Express Lanes Project is a transformative $4.6 billion infrastructure initiative led by SR400 Constructors, a 50/50 joint venture between Flatiron Dragados and ACCIONA. Commissioned by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and Georgia State Road Tollway Authority (SRTA), the project will add two 16-mile express lanes from Sandy Springs MARTA Station (Exit 5) to McFarland (Exit 12), enhancing mobility along one of Georgia’s busiest corridors. With a peak workforce of over 500, the project also includes dedicated bus rapid transit stations and key bridge refurbishments. Construction is set to begin in late 2025, with substantial completion anticipated in 2031.

The Project Engineer – Drainage will support field construction and engineering coordination for roadway storm drainage systems across one of the SR400 segments. This role supports short-term planning, survey and elevation checks, installation sequencing, testing, and documentation to help ensure drainage work meets project requirements. The Project Engineer works closely with superintendents, subcontractors, survey, earthwork and utility teams, and senior engineers to track installation progress, address field conflicts, and support safe operations.

Job Description

• - Support field construction of storm drainage systems, reinforced concrete pipe, culverts, box culverts, catch basins, manholes, headwalls, ditches, swales, underdrains, and other roadway drainage systems.
• - Coordinate daily drainage activities with Superintendents, Foremen, subcontractors, survey crews, earthwork teams, utility personnel, suppliers, and quality staff.
• - Review drainage plans, profiles, details, pipe schedules, structure schedules, specifications, and existing field conditions.
• - Verify drainage structure locations, pipe alignments, invert elevations, slopes, grades, cover requirements, and outfall elevations before installation.
• - Coordinate excavation, trench protection, bedding, pipe installation, drainage structures, backfill, compaction, dewatering, and restoration activities.
• - Sequence drainage installation with earthwork, roadway, pavement, structures, retaining walls, and utility construction.
• - Identify and resolve conflicts between proposed drainage systems and utilities, structures, foundations, roadway grades, and existing infrastructure.
• - Coordinate tie-ins to existing drainage systems and verify existing elevations and field conditions before permanent connections.
• - Assist in resolving groundwater, unsuitable soils, rock, utility conflicts, pipe conflicts, and elevation discrepancies encountered during construction.
• - Coordinate temporary drainage, bypass pumping, dewatering, erosion-control measures, and storm-event preparation.
• - Track drainage quantities, material deliveries, installation progress, subcontractor performance, testing, and inspections.
• - Develop drainage look-ahead plans and maintain RFIs, quantity records, field changes, daily reports, photographs, redlines, and as-built elevations.
• - Monitor cost, schedule, quality, environmental compliance, trench safety, and overall safety performance for assigned drainage activities.

Required Skills and Competencies

• - Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
• - Minimum of 3 years of field experience in infrastructure, roadway, or bridge construction preferred.
• - Familiarity with GDOT projects and knowledge of AASHTO and FHWA standards is a plus.
• - Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to field offices and job sites as needed.
• - Basic knowledge of cost tracking, budget monitoring, and field production documentation.
• - Proficiency in construction technologies and software such as Primavera P6, Procore, Bluebeam, and HCSS.
• - Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and traffic control plans.
• - Strong communication and coordination skills with both field and office teams.
