Job summary

Tighe & Bond is seeking a Project Engineer 2 for our Transportation team in Middletown, CT (or Shelton, CT). You will contribute to design of roads, bridges, and multimodal infrastructure while collaborating with state and local agencies.

The role emphasizes leadership on projects, mentoring staff, and advancing sustainable transportation solutions in a hybrid work environment. A PE license or progression toward licensure is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • PE license or ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in roadway and highway design.
  • Strong knowledge of transportation engineering, traffic operations, signal systems, and safety analysis.
  • Experience preparing traffic impact studies, safety assessments, and planning reports.
  • Familiarity with MUTCD, HCM, and state/local design standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Preferred CTDOT experience and proficiency with traffic analysis tools.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and assist in the design and development of roadway/highway projects, including alignment and ADA compliance.
  • Prepare engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates per CT DOT standards.
  • Perform geometric design, grading, drainage, pavement design, and traffic planning.
  • Prepare and review traffic analyses, simulation models, safety studies, and reports.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, subconsultants, and survey professionals.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables; ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Communicate with clients and stakeholders; provide project updates and resolve challenges.
  • Mentor junior staff and support business development through proposals and meetings.

Responsibilities, Requirements, and Total Rewards

What You’ll Be Doing

As a valuable part of ourTransportation team, aProject Engineer will support a variety of projects and gain hands‑on experience with responsibilities such as:

  • Lead and assist in the design and development of roadway/highway projects, including horizontal and vertical alignment, intersection and interchange design, and ADA compliance
  • Prepare engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates in accordance with Connecticut DOT and local agency standards
  • Perform geometric design, grading, drainage, pavement design, and traffic control planning
  • Preparing and reviewing traffic analyses, traffic simulation models, safety studies, signal timing evaluations, and transportation planning reports
  • Coordinate with internal multidisciplinary teams including traffic, structural, environmental, subconsultants and survey professionals
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables; ensure compliance with contract requirements and regulatory standards
  • Communicate with clients, stakeholders, and public agencies to provide project updates and resolve technical challenges
  • Mentor junior staff and support business development through proposal preparation and client meetings

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable timeframe
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in roadway and highway design
  • Strong knowledge of transportation engineering principles, traffic operations, traffic signal systems, and roadway safety analysis
  • Experience preparing traffic impact studies, safety assessments, and transportation planning reports
  • Familiarity with MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), and applicable state and local design standards
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience working with CTDOT and Connecticut transportation agencies
  • Experience with Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, SIDRA, or other traffic analysis and simulation software
  • Experience with OpenRoads (with CT DOT DDE) and AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Familiarity with permitting processes and environmental documentation
  • Experience mentoring and leading technical staff
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification and/or Roadway Safety Professional certification
  • Membership and/or leadership experience within industry organizations (ITE, ASCE, WTS, ITS)
