Job summary

JE Dunn is seeking a Project Engineer to support on-site construction activities, manage coordination with the project team, and learn/implement company safety and quality plans. This role covers planning, field execution, QA/QC, punch lists, and preparing necessary documentation to keep projects moving.

You will assist with estimating, change management, and reporting, maintain CMiC documentation, track progress, manpower, and equipment, and help integrate Lean practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering or related field.
  • 2+ years construction experience.
  • Willing to travel/relocate and work non-traditional hours.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.

Role Summary

The Project Engineer will complete and support routine construction and field execution responsibilities for construction projects utilizing construction fundamentals and company best practice standards, processes, resources and tools. This position will be responsible for participating in many facets of the construction process, such as general construction management, punch lists and executing self‑perform work, in order to understand the building process and how JE Dunn executes projects. All activities will be performed in support of the strategy, vision and values of JE Dunn.

Key Role Responsibilities – Core
  • Learn and actively participate in all aspects of the company’s safety and quality plans and culture by demonstrating commitment to an injury‑free environment through individual actions and mentoring others.
  • Participate with project QA/QC planning to ensure quality for assigned tasks.
  • Learn and participate in the estimating and change management process and tools, including quantity take‑off and review of subcontractor proposals.
  • Work on site with the project team to support a variety of tasks such as monitoring crew size, self‑perform hours, materials, quantity and equipment.
  • Participate in activities such as punch lists, city inspections, safety reviews, quality reviews and preparation of the necessary documentation.
  • Post drawings and specifications with most recent information.
  • Organize and participate in various project meetings. Prepare and disseminate required documentation as appropriate.
  • Prepare a variety of reports including project daily reports, weekly progress reports, unit reporting, percentage complete, daily manpower, production schedules, equipment tracking, etc., in order to support the project.
  • Perform periodic job site observations with project leadership.
  • Create procurement logs based on the project schedule and specification requirements. Track shop drawings and follow up with deliveries as directed by the project team.
  • Provide progress updates and report back to the project team to support the scheduling process.
  • Support the close‑out of projects, including but not limited to the punch list, operations and maintenance manuals, as‑built drawings, etc.
  • Utilize company best practice standards and fundamentals for building and construction techniques.
  • Build relationships and develop communication and interpersonal skills with tradespeople and project team members such as foreman, journeymen, superintendents, subcontractors, etc.
  • Develop an understanding about the various functions and support roles across the company and how each contributes to the success of a project.
  • Collaborate and demonstrate teamwork in a project setting.
  • Learn and incorporate Lean practices into regular activities.
  • Learn about best practices for identifying, developing and integrating self‑perform opportunities into the project.
Key Role Responsibilities – Additional Core
  • Participate in implementing project safety plans and ensure a culture of compliance through use of training, toolbox talks and communication with Safety Representatives.
  • Support the preparation of estimates, schedules, work plans, daily logs, etc.
  • Pre‑plan crew activities, fulfill the requirements of the daily task plan, complete look‑ahead schedule and provide updates to project superintendent.
  • Support and/or complete job set‑up and project administration in CMiC and other company technologies.
  • Participate with project team in managing subcontractor(s) scope of work.
  • Coordinate with internal project support functions as directed by project team.
  • Control costs by evaluating and improving processes of assigned tasks.
  • Participate with project QA/QC planning to ensure quality for assigned tasks.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of project crew schedule.
  • Provide analysis for MOC Materials and Other Costs and equipment on project site.
  • Support and participate in training and mentoring less experienced project team members.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to perform work accurately and completely, and in a timely manner.
  • Communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure and available resources.
  • Knowledge of Lean process and philosophy.
  • Knowledge of required construction technology.
  • Ability to apply fundamentals of the means and methods of construction management.
  • Knowledge of self‑perform and labor productivity.
  • Ability to assess and optimize project productivity.
  • Knowledge of specific trades and scopes of work.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, internally and externally.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering or related field.
  • In lieu of the above requirements, equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
Experience
  • 2+ years construction experience.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • May require periods of travel and/or relocation.
  • Must be willing to work non‑traditional hours to meet project needs.
  • May be exposed to extreme conditions (hot or cold).
  • Frequent activity: Standing, Walking, Climbing, Bending, Reaching above shoulder, Pushing, Pulling.
  • Occasional activity: Sitting, Viewing computer screen.
