Job summary

Lock Search Group is seeking a highly capable Project Engineer to translate conceptual designs into practical, buildable systems for water management, piping, and process equipment across industrial facilities in New York.

You will lead multidisciplinary engineering activities, review PFDs and P&IDs, support site visits, prepare drawings and BOMs, and coordinate with vendors, consultants, and contractors to ensure on-time, within-budget project delivery.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Professional engineering experience in an industrial environment.
  • Experience involving water management, wastewater, fluid handling, piping, and process systems.
  • Strong understanding of piping design, layout, and constructability.
  • Experience reviewing or working with PFDs and P&IDs.

Compensation: $115,000–$145,000, based on experience

PURPOSE

Our client is seeking a highly capable Project Engineer to provide the detailed engineering required to translate conceptual designs into practical, buildable systems and infrastructure.This role will support the engineering, design, and execution of complex projects involving water management, fluid handling, process systems, piping, pumping, and related infrastructure.The successful candidate must be a qualified engineer with a background in mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering and experience in an industrial environment. Candidates with experience in water or wastewater treatment, oil and gas, process industries, chemical processing, or other industries involving complex piping and fluid management systems are strongly encouraged to apply.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Project Leadership & Coordination
  • Manage multiple engineering projects simultaneously and deliver designs within established scope, schedule, quality, and budget requirements.
  • Coordinate project schedules, priorities, and deliverables across internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify project risks, conflicts, and technical challenges and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Maintain regular communication with engineers, designers, consultants, contractors, vendors, and project team members.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities to support successful project execution.
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and cross-functional support to team members as appropriate.
Technical Operations
  • Coordinate the engineering, implementation, execution, and completion of assigned projects involving fluid handling, piping, pumping, process equipment, water management, wastewater treatment, or similar industrial systems.
  • Perform site visits and collect technical information to support engineering, estimating, feasibility assessments, and project development.
  • Support installation, startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities as required.
  • Review and maintain Bills of Materials for valves, instrumentation, piping components, equipment, and other project infrastructure.
  • Review Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for technical accuracy and consistency.
  • Coordinate the preparation and delivery of engineering drawings, specifications, equipment documentation, and operation and maintenance packages.
  • Support the development of equipment foundation and loading information.
  • Perform technical reviews of vendor quotations, proposals, and equipment selections.
  • Ensure engineering designs remain aligned with the Basis of Design and applicable project requirements.
  • Coordinate and review 3D plant models and equipment layouts to identify and resolve design conflicts, constructability concerns, and piping or equipment layout issues.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design activities involving process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and controls engineering.
  • Review engineering designs for compliance with applicable codes, standards, project specifications, and Authority Having Jurisdiction requirements.
Piping & Fluid Systems
  • Apply strong knowledge of piping design and layout principles.
  • Support decisions related to pipe sizing, material selection, fittings, valves, supports, equipment connections, and constructability.
  • Evaluate fluid handling systems and equipment to ensure designs are technically sound, practical, and suitable for construction and operation.
  • Coordinate engineering solutions involving complex piping networks and liquid or process systems.
Administrative & Project Support
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering plans, specifications, schedules, resource requirements, and cost estimates.
  • Support proposal development and project costing activities.
  • Communicate project status, costs, technical issues, and implementation constraints to management and project stakeholders.
  • Prepare and maintain engineering analyses, specifications, reports, and other technical documentation.
  • Assist in reviewing work in progress to ensure materials and installations comply with approved plans and specifications.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office and other engineering and project management software as required.
Safety
  • Apply a working knowledge of applicable OSHA requirements and industry safety standards.
  • Ensure engineering designs appropriately consider safe access, operation, maintenance, and personnel protection.
Other Responsibilities
  • Travel domestically and internationally as required for project assignments.
  • Maintain current professional and technical knowledge through continuing education and industry engagement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Professional engineering experience in an industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience involving water management, wastewater, fluid handling, process systems, piping, pumping, oil and gas, chemical processing, or similar liquid-based infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of piping design and layout, including pipe sizing, material selection, valves, fittings, supports, equipment connections, and constructability.
  • Experience reviewing or working with PFDs and P&IDs.
  • Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering and design activities.
  • Strong technical problem-solving, communication, and project coordination skills.
Preferred
  • Experience in water or wastewater treatment.
  • Experience with reverse osmosis, membrane systems, pumping systems, process equipment, or other advanced fluid treatment technologies.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • Experience supporting projects through construction, commissioning, and startup.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Valid passport or ability to obtain required travel documentation may be required.
  • Professional Engineering licensure is preferred but not required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The position requires a combination of office-based engineering work and periodic field activities. Employees may be required to sit, stand, walk, climb ladders, stoop, bend, and occasionally perform physical activities associated with site inspections.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in both office and industrial or construction environments. Field assignments may involve exposure to machinery, noise, dust, dirt, grease, outdoor conditions, and other industrial hazards. Appropriate personal protective equipment may be required.
