Job summary

Barry-Wehmiller, via Afinitas/RJ Watson, seeks a Design Engineer in the Buffalo, NY area. The role focuses on engineering manufactured products to meet contract, performance, and quality requirements, with duties spanning design development, calculations, and collaboration with owners, engineers, inspectors and contractors.

We value strong technical writing, CAD/simulation skills, and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• 2–5 years of experience in a Design Engineer role.
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering.
• Strong understanding of steel fabrication processes, techniques, and quality standards.
• Ability to interpret and communicate contract documents effectively.
• Proficiency in performing engineering calculations.
• Technical writing skills for customer correspondence.
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
• Commitment to process adherence and quality workflows.

Responsibilities

• Engineer products meeting contract, performance and quality requirements.
• Review contract plans and governing specifications.
• Develop designs with engineering calculations and reports.
• Create RFIs to facilitate the design process.
• Determine detailing requirements and communicate to detailers for shop drawings.
• Evaluate as-built conditions against design parameters for performance.
• Communicate with project owners, engineers, inspectors and contractors.
• Assess and justify design changes or alternatives as needed.
• Provide customer supervision for installation per specs.
• Contribute to R&D, new product design and testing programs.
• Other duties as necessary.

Job Description

Summary This Engineering and Quality Group position engineers products meeting design, performance, constructability and quality requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBLITIES

• To engineer manufactured products which meet specific contract, performance and quality requirements.
• Review of contract plans, proposals and appropriate state or other governing agencies specifications.
• Develop designs supported by engineering calculations and reports.
• Creation of RFI’s to facilitate the design process.
• Determine special detailing requirements and communicate design information to Detailers for shop drawing development.
• Evaluate and determine adequacy of as-built conditions for products deviating from design parameters as it relates to the intended performance characteristics.
• Communicate and interact with project owners, engineers, inspectors and contractors.
• Ability to evaluate comments made by reviewing parties for validity and adjust designs as necessary or create rebuttal argument as to why design alteration is not required.
• Provide customer supervision for product installation as required by project specification.
• Special projects including but not limited to research and development, new product design, testing program advancement.
• Other duties as necessary.

Qualifications

• Work Experience: 2–5 years of experience in a Design Engineer role.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
• Skills & Knowledge Areas Required:
  • Strong understanding of steel fabrication processes, techniques, and quality standards.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate contract documents effectively.
  • Proficiency in performing engineering calculations.
  • Technical writing skills for customer correspondence.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to process adherence and quality workflows.
• Preferred:
  • Familiarity with DOT standards.
  • Familiarity with ASTM material specifications.
  • Experience with solid modeling software.

Its engineers and specialists develop and manufacture innovative, customized structural engineering solutions for seismic and non-seismic applications.

The approximate pay range for this position is $80,000 - $95,000. Please note that the pay range is a good faith estimate at the time of posting and may vary based on factors such as experience, skills, and geographic location.
