Job description

Position Title: Project Engineer (Utility Scale Solar, Substation, and BESS Projects)
Position Type: Direct Hire, Full-Time
Position Location(s) & Travel Requirements:
  • 100% Travel to Project Sites as Assigned (Fully On-Site Position)
  • Projects Located Throughout the United States
Role Overview:

Project Engineers work as part of a team of engineering, construction, quality, management, and controls personnel to deliver utility-scale Photovoltaic Arrays, Substations, and/or Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Project Engineers drive outcomes by leveraging project design expertise and data analysis to support the execution of Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, PV, Structural, and SCADA teams, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.

Project Engineers are site experts in key aspects of project design and execution. They communicate regularly with installation teams, Engineers of Record, subcontractors, and client stakeholders to ensure effective coordination and delivery.

Individuals who are successful in this role are thoughtful and analytical, with a strong ability to turn engineering concepts and data into action. These roles offer opportunities for growth across engineering, preconstruction, and project management functions within the Power sector.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support renewable energy construction projects by assisting with coordination, documentation, and field/site activities, taking increasing responsibility for assigned tasks under guidance from senior engineers or the Project Manager.
  • Maintain organized project documentation, including meeting minutes, status reports, logs, and technical correspondence, ensuring accuracy and accessibility for team members and stakeholders.
  • Build familiarity with project scope, requirements, and processes (engineering, procurement, permitting, and construction), identifying potential questions or gaps and flagging them for review.
  • Assist with schedule tracking and progress monitoring, updating assigned portions of the schedule, identifying deviations, and notifying senior team members of issues to keep work on track.
  • Prepare and coordinate change order documentation, gathering relevant data, drafting requests, and supporting cost and schedule impact assessments under supervision.
  • Review interdisciplinary design documents, including Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Structural, and Communications IFC drawings, providing redlines, clarifications, and supporting compliance with design intent.
  • Contribute to team process improvement efforts, helping gather data, document workflows, and suggest ideas to enhance efficiency and repeatable practices.
  • Facilitate coordination between discipline teams, ensuring timely communication, tracking open items, and supporting smooth handoffs between Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Modules teams.
  • Assist in resolving day-to-day project issues by gathering information, coordinating with field teams and contractors, and escalating complex problems to senior engineers as needed.
  • Document lessons learned and support the incorporation of improvements into templates, checklists, or reference materials to enhance project delivery.

Note: In addition to these duties, personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required to support the objectives of the company.

Position Requirements:
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) designation or Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
Experience
  • 1–7 years of project engineering or project management experience in a technical or fast-paced domain.
  • Previous solar, substation, and/or Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) experience preferred.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, able to create and maintain organized spreadsheets, reports, and project documentation for analysis and coordination.
  • Working knowledge of Bluebeam, Procore, and Autodesk, capable of performing document reviews, markups, and basic modeling or takeoffs with some independence.
  • Familiarity with GPS survey control, GPS machine control, and ditch design, able to support field teams and apply workflows under limited supervision.
  • Able to solve structured and moderately unstructured engineering problems, applying practical solutions and escalating complex issues when needed.
  • Strong interest in renewable energy, applying domain knowledge to support project delivery and improve processes.
  • Receptive to feedback and committed to professional growth, incorporating lessons learned to enhance work quality.
  • Clear and effective communicator, able to coordinate with contractors, suppliers, and internal teams, and relay technical information accurately.
  • Detail-oriented, ensuring thorough and accurate reviews of drawings, submittals, RFIs, and project documentation.
  • Foundational understanding of construction codes and regulations, applying them to assigned project tasks.
  • Able to contribute to small work packages or team tasks, supporting efficient project execution.
  • Demonstrates consistent safety awareness, following procedures and understanding the safety implications of engineering work.
  • Takes initiative to advance tasks and support the team, completing work reliably within deadlines.
  • Able to read, interpret, and apply construction documents, with growing confidence and decreasing reliance on supervision.
Working Conditions:

This position is field-based and often works within remote project locations.

  • Travel and/or living in temporary accommodations is required.
  • Must be able to work a schedule of 6 days on, 1 day off.
  • 10-hour shifts are required for the duration of the project.
