Job summary

Schuff Steel is seeking a Project Engineer to support project management and field coordination for structural steel projects. You will assist with submittals, RFIs, and document control while ensuring alignment with contract documents and Schuff’s procedures.

You will coordinate with project teams, forecast schedule impacts, and help manage turnover packages and closeout documentation as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering discipline is required.
  • 3–5 years related experience in project management or engineering in structural steel.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret shop drawings and contract documents.

Job description

As a Project Engineer at Schuff Steel, you will be responsible for supporting the management and administration of project activities as directed by the Project Manager to ensure execution of the work in accordance with Schuff’s procedures and the contract documents. Also, responsible for scheduling meetings, taking meeting minutes, keeping up with project relevant documents, providing detailed information to the field, supporting daily field coordination, schedule tracking, and field quality management.

Job Overview
  • Provides support and co-leading with Construction and Project Mangers to include receiving, logging, reviewing, tracking, expediting, and distribution of submittals, RFI’s, and other project controls documentation
  • Receives and reviews submittals returned from Architect or Engineer and notifies the Project Team of potential cost and/or schedule impacts based on review comments
  • Develops a comprehensive working knowledge and understanding of the contract documents (plans, specifications, schedule, etc.)
  • Collects data, assembles, and distributes various weekly reports as required
  • Assists the Project Manager, Superintendent and Procurement with purchasing, expediting and receiving material and equipment for the project
  • Assists in the preparation, issuance, and receipt of bid packages between field teams and procurement for review and tabulation
  • Assists with managing the project schedule on a regular basis. Identifies schedule conflicts and assists the Construction and Project Managers in their resolution
  • Actively manage field coordination of subcontractors and quality management
  • Manages and maintains all project documentation to ensure the most current project documents are communicated to the Construction team
  • Drive the Project Team in the timely completion of all required project closeout documents per contract, including turnover packages, assaults, O&M manuals, warranties, owner training, punch lists, and other related items
  • Assists with scheduling of Project Team meetings with all required personnel. Takes and issues meeting minutes as required
  • Serve as a direct link between Detailers, Project Managers and other production departments and customer, other contractors and Design Team as may be required.

Work Experience
  • 3–5 years related experience in project management, engineering, systems design, or other related field in the structural steel industry or 5 years related experience as a Project Coordinator/Engineer or Asst. Proj. Mgr. Along with 3 years detailing/drafting/computer modeling.
Education/Training
  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related engineering discipline is required.
Specialized Knowledge – Certificates & Licenses
  • As outlined in the Core Competencies, an individual must have thorough knowledge and an advanced understanding of each competency outlined above in order to carry out the essential functions of this position.
  • Specialized Knowledge is also required in the following areas: General knowledge of fabrication and erection standards and procedures. General knowledge of AISC standards and AWS codes.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret shop and design blueprint drawings.
  • Proven ability to manage large, multiple commercial and industrial projects.
  • General knowledge of 3D modeling / Tekla system. Ability to manage multiple projects while meeting stringent deadlines.

Work Environment
The position requires as many hours needed to fulfill the daily and weekly obligations required to carry out the functions. Working long days, including evenings and weekends, can be required for this position. Position requires frequent out-of-state air/road travel as needed and required. A clean driving record will be required due to required road travel. Current and valid driver’s license and proof of acceptable insurance is required. This position is generally indoors in a climate controlled office. However, frequent visitations to the outdoor plant facilities will be required. Travel time is 50%.
