Job summary

Ames Construction is a leading heavy civil and industrial contractor based in the United States. The Project Engineer will support planning, coordination, and execution of highway and civil projects, ensuring safety, quality, and compliance with contract requirements.

The role collaborates with project management, field supervision, subcontractors, and inspectors. Qualifications include a bachelor's degree in engineering and at least one year of relevant experience.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of experience in heavy civil or highway construction.
• Knowledge of construction methods, equipment, and materials.

• Willingness to work long hours as required.

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning, coordination, and execution to support schedules/budgets.
• Design, review, and implement temporary works with safety focus.
• Inspect work, identify issues, coordinate corrective actions.
• Provide on-site direction and technical support to foremen/crews/subcontractors.
• Monitor progress and prepare daily reports, quantities, documentation.
• Perform quality control inspections for contract documents.
• Verify materials and workmanship meet requirements.
• Enforce safety policies, OSHA regulations, and PPE use.
• Support cost tracking, schedule updates, and stakeholder coordination.
• Assist with communication between field, management, owners, inspectors.

The Project Engineer supports the planning, coordination, and execution of heavy highway and civil construction projectsatAmesConstructionto ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with contract requirements. This role works closely with project management, field supervision, subcontractors, and inspectors to deliver high-quality infrastructure projects, including roadways, bridges, and other civil structures.

KeyResponsibilities

• Assistin the planning, coordination, and execution of construction activities to support project schedules and budgets
• Design, review, and implement temporary works and construction means and methods with a strong emphasis on safety
• Inspect installed work, equipment, and materials;identifyissues and coordinate corrective actions as needed
• Provide on-site direction and technical support toforemen, crews, and subcontractors
• Monitor project progress and prepareaccuratedaily reports, quantities, and documentation
• Perform quality control inspections to ensure workcomplies withcontract documents, plans, and specifications
• Verify materials and workmanship meet project requirements and approved submittals
• Enforce safety policies, OSHA regulations, and proper use of PPE on the job site
• Support project cost tracking, schedule updates, and coordination with project stakeholders
• Assistwith communication between the field, project management, owners, and inspectors

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineeringor a related engineering discipline
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Project Engineer, Field Engineer, or similar role in heavy civil or highway construction
• Strong understanding of construction methods, equipment, and materials used in civil infrastructure projects
• Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and job-site safety practices
• High attention to detail with strong organizational skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Ability to work extended hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and occasional holidays, asrequiredto meet project schedules

Working Conditions

• This projectislocatedinPlatte, South Dakota. Subsequentprojects will be nationally based.
• Travel between job sites may be required depending on project location.
• Work is primarily performed on activeconstructionjob sites, including highways, roadways, and heavy civil infrastructure projects.
• Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and dust.
• Position requires walking, standing, climbing, bending, and lifting in a construction environment.
• Frequent interaction with heavy equipment, moving machinery, traffic, and construction hazards; strict adherence to safety protocols isrequired.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory at all job sites.
