Job summary

New York State Education Department / NYS Museum is seeking a detail-oriented Project Coordinator / Biologist to support planning, coordination, and execution on a five-year freshwater mussel restoration project in St. Lawrence County.

The role blends field and lab work with data management and partner communication. The successful candidate will manage budgets, prepare reports, and coordinate travel while collaborating with project managers, agencies, and teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field.
• 2+ years of relevant biological, environmental, consulting, or project coordination experience.
• Experience conducting biological field surveys or environmental assessments.
• Strong organizational and project management skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with GIS is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and assist with planning and coordination of field work including data and sample collection and processing.
• Maintain budget records for grant expenditures and coordinate field travel.
• Coordinate and perform laboratory analyses including tissue glycogen analysis, shell sectioning, isotope analysis, and macroinvertebrate identification.
• Data management, QA/QC of data, statistical analyses, and reporting.
• Prepare and review technical reports, field notes, maps, and project correspondence.
• Coordinate with field crews and project resources including purchasing and equipment maintenance.
• Communicate with project managers, regulatory agencies, contractors, and internal teams.
• Track milestones and maintain organized project files.

Experience | 2 - 4 years |**Position Summary**We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Project Coordinator / Biologist to support the planning, coordination, and execution of activities on a five-year project to help restore freshwater mussels in remediated areas of the lower Grasse River (St. Lawrence County). This position is ideal for a biologist who enjoys a combination of field and laboratory work, project coordination, data management and analysis, and communication with project partners, scientists, and the public. The successful candidate will help ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with project requirements.**Key Responsibilities*** Coordinate and assist with planning and coordination of field work including data and sample collection and processing.* Maintain budget records for grant expenditures, prepare detailed project reports, and coordinate field work travel needs (lodging, transport, etc.) for field crews.* Coordinate and perform laboratory analyses including mussel tissue glycogen analysis, mussel shell sectioning and stable isotope analysis, and macroinvertebrate identification.* Data management, analysis, and reporting, including QA/QC of data, statistical analyses of data, and tabular and graphic summarization of data.* Prepare and review technical reports, field notes, survey documentation, maps, and project correspondence.* Coordinate and assist with field crews and other project resources including purchasing, preparation, and maintenance of field equipment and gear.* Communicate with project managers, regulatory agencies, contractors, and internal team members.* Track project milestones and action items.* Maintain organized project files, databases, photographs, and documentation.* Support preparation of methods, proposals, scopes of work, cost estimates, and project budgets.* Prepare and present results at meetings and conferences.* Perform other biological, environmental, and project coordination duties as assigned.**Qualifications*** Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Fisheries, Wildlife Biology, Freshwater Ecology, Malacology, Natural Resources, or a related field.* 2+ years of relevant biological, environmental, consulting, or project coordination experience preferred.* Experience conducting biological field surveys or environmental assessments.* Strong organizational and project management skills.* Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and projects simultaneously.* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.* Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.* Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook; familiarity with SharePoint is a plus.* Experience with GIS software such as ArcPro is preferred.* Familiarity working with State and Federal agencies is preferred.* Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.* Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as required.**Preferred Experience**Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:* Freshwater mussel restoration* Biological resource assessments* Wildlife surveys and/or aquatic habitat assessments* GIS and spatial data management* Working with federal, state, or local environmental agencies* Open-water SCUBA certification* Small boat operation and trailering**Work Environment**This position involves a combination of field, laboratory, and office work. Field assignments may involve working on small outboard motorboats, walking over uneven terrain, working outdoors in varying weather conditions, and occasional overnight travel.
