Job summary

Vopak is seeking a Project Controller to support financial activities for capital projects, including accruals and cost controls across sustaining and growth initiatives.

Responsibilities include tracking costs, reporting variances, and assisting with accruals and insurance coordination while ensuring compliance with fiscal obligations and safety requirements.

Qualifications

  • Accredited bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in company accounting/controlling with cost forecasting, cost accounting, and/or project accounting.
  • Experience with accrual-based accounting and cost status reporting.

Job description

Project Controller

As a Project Controller, you will support the financials, accruals, and cost controls for all capital projects (sustaining and growth).

Responsibilities
  • Track, monitor, forecast, and report on sustaining capex project costs for the regions.
  • Provide cost control support to multiple Project Managers in areas of cost reporting, budget comparison, and forecasting.
  • Oversee, track and monitor project total expenditures and performance data versus budget, time‑schedule, and recommend actions to improve progress.
  • Support the accrual process by tracking reversals and ensuring invoices are matched to accruals, as appropriate.
  • Monthly reconcile project cost management tools with the OCS.
  • Inform Finance about all project‑related tax issues and ensure Finance involvement in local project tax requirements to optimize and comply with fiscal obligations.
  • Coordinate monthly meetings between stakeholders to assess and determine accruals and ETCs.
  • Perform project costing related reporting to the Project Manager for weekly and monthly review to keep expenditures within the project budget.
  • Manage monthly Sustaining Capex reporting, consolidating data from Opcos for submission to Global stakeholders.
  • Ensure required project‑related insurances are in place, such as Construction All Risk Insurance, in cooperation with Global Insurances, and act as first contact for any insurance‑related topics.
  • Provide cost control and planning advice to the internal Project Management team, as needed, to utilize contingency or reallocation.
  • Support the Project Manager in developing a KPI control framework, risk register for scheduling and cost items, periodic reporting, and monitoring of follow‑up actions.
  • Analyze financial information to recognize variance trends and understand the drivers.
  • Report on trends and risks related to costs/schedule.
  • Abide by all safety procedures and practices applicable to location and position; participate in safety training.
  • Perform other duties assigned by management that fall within the generally expected scope of this position.
  • Monitor the project approval process, ensuring strict adherence to budgetary constraints and timely project closure.
  • Interface with Reporting and Control Manager, Project Managers, Development and updates to project cost tracking tools, Project Controls, Project Cost System development, Project Cost Tracking update, management, and analytics, Contracts Manager/Procurement, and Collection of Procurement Reports.
  • Forecast timing and quantification of invoices, receiving of goods and services, and support the accrual process.
Qualifications
  • Accredited Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or another closely related business field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in company accounting/controlling with experience in cost forecasting, cost accounting, and/or project accounting, budgeting/estimating.
  • Experience assessing project status from a cost perspective and advising project management of cost status and areas of concern.
  • Experience gathering cost information from various components of the project team, including contractors and suppliers.
  • Experience reconciling cost tracking tools to enterprise accounting systems.
  • Experience in an accrual‑based accounting environment.
  • Experience with petroleum, petrochemical, chemical and related industries preferred.
  • Excellent and proven knowledge of accounting and financial systems; proven analytical skills.
  • Proven ability to operate multi‑task under stressful situations (multiple deadlines, multiple customers, and different conditions and formats of data).
  • Customer service focus including the ability to speak diplomatically; problem solver.
  • Excellent computer skills, including ability to use the MS Office suite and advanced Excel (expert user).
  • Excellent English communication skills, both oral and written.

Physical Demands

Work Environment
  • Office and Terminal Employee – office environment with exposure to outside elements.
  • Extreme elements: heat up to 104°F (40°C) in summer; cold down to 15°F (-10°C) in winter.
  • Exposure to various chemicals and compounds, including fumes and smells, some hazardous.
  • May need to wear PPE required by the location; noise level usually moderate.
